What is proprioception? 🤔
This system is one of the lesser known of our eight senses. It has a really big influence on our body awareness along with identifying and grading both force and pressure.
The receptors are located in our muscles, joints, ligaments, skin and bones! Movement will trigger feedback to these receptors then the brain which then provides information about where our hands, feet, legs and arms are in relation to our body! If there is a difficulty in this area, it will affect our running, walking, skipping however, proprioception can be improved through exercises that involve balance and co-ordination.

Now that the weather is improving (well, should be 🙃), gardening offers lots of benefits for our children. It helps their mental, physical and social wellbeing. 🏡
Not only does it encourage physical activity (great for our fine/gross motor skills), but also promotes good mental health, calming, social skills and learning. If you're growing vegetables and fruit, it will aid healthy eating habits.
Enjoy! 🏡👩🌾👨🌾

Soon our Tree Toppers will be gearing up for the return to school after the Easter holiday. Many parents/carers will see lots of these being displayed by your child as they will be in a constant emotional state, worrying about school.
With a little bit of preparation and support, you can make the transition to back to school less stressful for everyone.
👍 Ease back into the routine beforehand.
👍 Use visual schedules and/or social stories.
👍 Use sensory tools, strategies, heavy work activities.
👍 Communicate with school if required.
👍 Give emotional support.
👍 Enlist the help of an SI trained occupational therapist.
👍 Familiarise your child with school by walking or driving past.
👍 Talk about feelings.
If you have any questions, just give us a shout 👋

Oral motor exercises will help strengthen and improve co-ordination of the tongue, jaw, lips and cheeks. This will aid feeding, speech and lessen drooling.
There are some easy tips in the video to help with this area.
Have fun by making silly faces in the mirror 🤪, on a fine day get the bubbles out 🗨, pop out to enjoy a thick milkshake 🥤or whilst in the garden, have a little picnic with hard crunchy snacks 😛
Enjoy!

Hand dryers or even hair dryers may cause sensory overload in SPD children.
Your child may get anxious when using rest rooms and therefore not want to use these facilities. 🥺
Does your child do this?

Have a go at some DIY games whilst our Tree Toppers are off school.
Fun to make then even more fun to play! 😆

Whilst our Tree Toppers are off school enjoying the Easter break, why not carry out some scissor skill practice? This is a lovely activity that can be used on a rainy day.

Tree Tops has been developed with great foundations in the knowledge of assessment and treatment techniques of children and adults. Our therapists have extensive knowledge into conditions such as DCD, Dyspraxia, ADHD, Attachment Disorder, and Sensory Processing Difficulties. Post graduate training in Sensory Integration has allowed us to introduce this specialised treatment to children and adults on a daily basis to develop their underlying difficulties.
Tree Tops work with many schools, charities and voluntary organisations. We can provide valuable training and programmes which helps with gross/fine motor skills, handwriting, building self-esteem, confidence, behaviour and perception.
Fizzwig (our mascot) and the Tree Topper teddy bears are a vital part of our organisation and go on many adventures with the children or help them with their programmes. Check out our website to see what they all get up to!
We also have a private sensory parent support group which you are more than welcome to join. Here is the link:- https://www.facebook.com/groups/spdpsg/ . A youth group has also been set up which is run through a secret page. If you would like more information please email our office.
Tree Tops are proud to make a difference to the ability to achieve, happiness and well-being of our children experiencing motor and sensory difficulties. The reviews and testimonials we have received ensure we continue with the service we are passionate about.
In 2019 we were asked to take part in the The Parliamentary Review. The aims of this are to share best practice amongst policymakers/business leaders, commissioning articles on events of the year and contributors’ areas of expertise. Over 1m copies will be distributed. A range of businesses from several sectors have written for this; the aim being to get their message out to the country at large, to inform policymakers, assist their peers, and ultimately raise standards.
Tree Tops has contributed to the 2019 Parliamentary Review and celebrated the publication at a Gala event in the Houses of Parliament on the 4/9/19. Our article focused on understanding sensory processing difficulties (SPD), in particular the many difficulties our children experience in education from academically under-performing to anxiety/potentially exclusions. The article strives to explain how sensory processing difficulties can result in challenging behaviours and affect a child’s social/emotional well-being. Our message was to stress how effective our interventions can be within the school environment to help children access learning, but give school staff more tools to target many youngster’s complex needs. Tree Tops endeavours to educate schools to understand SPD and integrate interventions into the classroom routine. We firmly believe if Head Teachers understood that by working in partnership with Tree Tops all children would have more chance of success whilst reducing resources needed to support them in the long term.
