🏅 Medal Monday – Wow, What an Experience!
Not the fastest of times, but my heart is so full ❤️
Training was hit and miss, and with my last long run 5 weeks out, I knew this one was going to hurt. I was confident I could get to 20 miles and then dig deep… but for some unknown reason, my glutes and hip flexors were trashed from the start (maybe that 6-hour drive didn’t help 😅).
After realising early on that today was going to be a slog, I had a quick chat with marathon master Gregg Penn around miles 10–13, and later a call to my sister just before mile 16. That’s when I changed my mindset, from racing to soaking it all in and just getting to the finish.
At mile 16, I met a runner struggling with stomach cramps. I stayed with her, talking her through it (probably to her annoyance at the time 😂) until she could run again. I tried to keep up, but my hips had other ideas, so it was back to walk–run mode.
Then at mile 20, I came across a man walking. I asked if he was okay, he said no, and got emotional. He told me he’d just been diagnosed with cancer a month ago and hadn’t told anyone and doesn't know why he is telling me now! I told him, “You’re 20 miles into a marathon, emotions are high, that’s why.”
He said it was prostate cancer and he didn’t know what the future held. I said, “Medicine is amazing these days, and what I do know is that you’ll need strength, resilience, and courage to beat this, and there’s no better place to show it than in a marathon.” He started running again… and that was the last I saw of him 🫶
At mile 22, I texted the girls’ group chat: “Marathon times have gone to s**t but I’m loving the experience!” 😂 Then came more encouragement from my sister, the girls saying “It’s just a parkrun to go!” and another runner, John, saying the exact same thing. Had to get a pic for proof 😅
From mile 22–25, a small group of us stuck together, cheering each other on. At mile 25, I even offered to help a lady lift her sons bike as she struggled with her dog! over a railing, she declined, but I was ready to help 😆
I high-fived kids, hit every “power me up” sign, thanked marshals, and even gave Gary a scare when he thought I was injured (sorry Gary, just loving life 😅).
