- 🎅 We’re Proud to Be Sponsoring the YMCA Santa’s Grotto This Christmas 🎄

We’re delighted to be supporting YMCA North Tyneside this year by sponsoring their Christmas Grotto, helping to make sure no child in our community misses out on the magic of meeting Santa.

But we need your help.

We’re collecting new or good-as-new children’s books (from toddlers up to pre-teens) to support the YMCA’s Christmas outreach. Rather than giving out selection boxes, the YMCA is gifting each child a book they can read with a parent, grandparent or sibling — a shared story, a quiet moment together and a bit of Christmas magic that lasts far longer than a treat.

The books we collect will be handed out at the Christmas Grotto Event, as well as throughout December at YMCA activities, including the Christmas Community Meal, Kids Clubs and Youth Groups, ensuring they reach families right across our community.

How to donate:

Drop books into our office:
E. Turnbull & Son
Albion Road, North Shields, NE29 0HE

Order books online and have them delivered straight to our office — Please mark parcels: “Book Drive – c/o YMCA”

Or we’re more than happy to collect from your home if that’s easier

Thank you so much for any support you can give.

Funeral Announcement

With immense sadness, the family announce the passing of Sarah Harrison on 2nd December 2025, aged 44.

A much loved wife of Chris, devoted mum to Charlie and Alice, beloved daughter of Annette and the late Joe Morrison, much-loved sister of Brian and Joanne. Sarah will be always loved and remembered by her family, wider family circle and many friends.

Sarah touched the lives of everyone who knew her with her kindness, warmth, and positivity. She was incredibly proud of the community built through Sarah’s Star and the comfort, connection, and hope it brought to others.

A service to celebrate Sarah’s life will take place at St Cuthbert’s Church, North Shields, on Friday 19th December at 11.30am, followed by a private family-only committal at Earsdon Cemetery.

Everyone is warmly welcome to join the family afterwards in the Trevelyan Room at the Linskill Centre from 1.00pm until 4.30pm.

Please don’t feel obliged to wear black - Sarah’s family would love you to wear whatever you feel most comfortable in.

Sarah’s family have requested donations in lieu of flowers to Sarah’s Star, with grateful thanks. Please visit www.sarahs-star.org

Sarah is deeply loved and forever missed by all her family and friends.

A heartfelt thank-you to Sue and her family for their wonderful testimonial. Your kind words are deeply appreciated by both our family and our team.

May I say a huge thank you to Ben and his wonderful team for the professional care and support given to my family recently. We lost our beautiful mum and were treated with the utmost respect and compassion. Ben led us through the arrangements at this sad time, arranging absolutely everything. Walked the hearse down to the church and again at the crem on a cold, drizzly day. This is a wonderful family company that certainly looks after our loved ones.

Thank you again from Sue, Shirley and Carole

- As National Grief Awareness Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to acknowledge everyone who is carrying loss, especially as we move toward Christmas.

Grief is not simple and it is not linear. It can feel heavy, confusing, or completely overwhelming, and Christmas can often amplify those emotions. Whether your loss is recent or long-standing, please remember there is no right or wrong way to feel.

If you’re finding things difficult, there is support available:

• Macmillan – Coping with Bereavement
https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/supporting-someone/coping-with-bereavement/support-with-grief

• Cruse Bereavement Support

• NHS – Help with Bereavement

• Samaritans (24/7)
https://www.samaritans.org / 116 123

Grief doesn’t disappear because the festive lights are switched on. Many families tell us that this time of year can bring a mix of memories, sadness, love and longing. If you are missing someone this Christmas, be gentle with yourself. Small steps, quiet moments, and leaning on others when you need to are all okay.

And please remember, our family is here too. If you ever need a listening ear, guidance, or simply someone to talk things through with, we are always here to help in any way we can.

You are not alone this Christmas.

I’ve attended the yearly P.R.O.P.S AGM this evening, and it’s been genuinely inspiring to hear about the incredible work the team does day in, day out.

PROPS supports people whose lives are affected by someone else’s drug or alcohol use. Hearing firsthand about the practical help, the emotional support, the one-to-one guidance and the group sessions that bring families together reminded me just how vital this service is. From helping people feel less isolated, to teaching coping strategies, to supporting young people across and , the impact is enormous.

Some of the carers were brave enough to speak about their own experiences tonight. Listening to them share their challenges, worries, and moments of hope made the work of PROPS feel even more powerful. It takes real courage to open up like that, and it highlighted exactly why this support matters so much.

The team delivers specialist programmes, structured interventions, mediation, education, and so much more. But above all, they provide hope. Tonight’s stories showed the difference they make to thousands of families who often don’t know where else to turn.

It’s amazing to see this work up close, and I’m proud to be a trustee for such a dedicated and compassionate organisation.

- It meant a lot to be part of yesterday's memorial service.

It was a gentle and heartfelt afternoon, and it was really special to see so many families come together to remember and reflect.

The robin theme felt particularly meaningful to me. Robins are often seen as little reminders that the people we miss are still close, especially at Christmas when memories feel even stronger. It felt like the perfect symbol for a service of remembrance.

The children from Monkhouse Primary School sang beautifully and brought so much warmth to the room. I hope everyone who attended was able to take some comfort from being there.

The remembrance tree will be set up next week in the Book of Remembrance room at Preston Cemetery, which is a peaceful space to visit and reflect. Seeded baubles will be available for anyone who would like to write a message to a loved one, and just like our seeded paper, the baubles will later be planted in the Garden of Remembrance to create a living tribute.

A big thank you to all of the partners involved today, including Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Cruse Bereavement Support, Bloom, and the North Tyneside Learning Trust. And a special thank you to North Tyneside Bereavement Services for pulling everything together so thoughtfully. Their care and organisation mean a great deal to families across our community.

If anyone would like a sheet of seeded paper for their own message, please feel free to call into the office.

- There’s a lot of noise right now about “cheap” funeral plans. Let’s talk about what actually matters…

We’ve all had one of those flyers through the door lately… or heard the adverts on the radio. Big promises, national brands, and a few hundred pounds off — but here’s something they won’t tell you:

💬 It’s not just about the price — it’s about who’s behind it.

At Turnbull’s, we’ve supported North Tyneside families since 1790. No call centres. No national chains. No “funeral arrangers.”
Just a real relationship with a local funeral director — an extension of our family caring for yours.

We’re a close-knit, full-time team who work together every day — no zero-hour contracts, and no staff moved around from branch to branch.

✅ Our prepaid plans are often more affordable than many expect
✅ You’ll always deal with the same caring team
✅ And we’ll help you create something meaningful and personal

Families also often find that when a funeral is needed now, our fees are lower than the national providers — with far more personal care included.

💬 We’re often better value — but our care and time come as standard.

🕊️ No pressure. No jargon. Just real advice from a family that’s been here for over 230 years.

Last night marked the North Tyneside Business Awards 2025, and while it wasn’t Turnbull’s turn to take home an award, we are absolutely thrilled to have been named as a finalist for the Heart of the Community Award alongside some remarkable businesses and to be recognised for our ongoing work within North Tyneside.

Thank you to everyone that took the time to vote 🙏

Earlier in the year, we were also proud to win the Positive Impact Award, so being acknowledged once again for our community commitment truly means a lot to us.

This nomination is a major milestone and a testament to our dedication to the people we serve. A huge thank you to our outstanding team – your hard work, passion and care for local families is what makes everything possible. 💛

One of the highlights of the evening was being reminded of just how many inspirational and innovative businesses we have here in North Tyneside. We met some fantastic people and want to extend our congratulations to everyone involved, especially the very well-deserved winners.

And finalNorth Tyneside Business Forumrth Tyneside Business Forum, the organisers of the North Tyneside Business Awards, for hosting such a brilliant event and for giving Turnbull’s this wonderful opportunity.
