Every 40 seconds, an older person in England or Wales falls victim to a scam. It’s a shocking statistic and one we simply can’t ignore.

That’s why the work being done by Age UK’s Scams Prevention and Support Programme is so important. It’s not just about raising awareness, but actively supporting those who’ve already been targeted and helping them feel safe again.

At Support Me at Home, we see firsthand how vulnerable some people can be. Because we visit regularly, we’re in a unique position to spot the warning signs early. Things like unusual phone calls, sudden financial worries, or changes in behaviour.

There have been occasions where we’ve had to step in and take action, including contacting the police to protect a client. It’s not something we take lightly, but safeguarding always comes first.

This is such an important message from Alzheimer’s Society. Knowing when someone needs more support is one of the hardest decisions families face, and the truth is there’s no single “right” answer.

For some people, moving into a care home is the right step. For others, the right support at home can help them stay in familiar surroundings for longer. What matters most is finding the option that keeps the person safe, supported and living as well as possible.

With the right support, many people living with dementia can continue to live safely and comfortably in the place they know best — their own home. Home care can help with daily tasks, personal care, medication, companionship and safety, often preventing or delaying the need for residential care.
