❄️Now that we are closed for Christmas we wanted to give you all some top tips for keeping your older, arthritic dogs comfortable in this colder weather!❄️

❄️ Keep your furry friends warm with cosy bedding and blankets to ensure joints aren’t cold and stiff.
❄️ Allow some time in the morning for your dogs to move around before heading out on your walks so that there joints can warm up well.
❄️ Rug up your floors to ensure you have non-slip surfaces for ongoing joint support.
❄️ Not too many Christmas treats to ensure your dogs weight is well controlled!
❄️ Avoid damp and wet conditions outside of hydrotherapy sessions!
❄️ If going out use a ramp to assist your dog in and out of the car.

❤️ Water buoyancy removed heavy loads through your dogs joints so they can enjoy movement.
❤️ At AquaPaws Northallerton we use an under water treadmill to reduce pressure through your dogs spine enabling them to keep a more supportive posture during sessions as opposed to a swimming pool.
❤️ Lastly, we also reward your fur baby with some tasty treats for there hard work!

UNPOPULAR OPINION: “Crate rest and pain medication ISN’T effective recovery for your dog” ‼️

Whilst a period of rest and pain relief medication is an important part of your dogs road to recovery it is NOT enough to restore long term comfort and function in your dog ‼️

What else is needed then⁉️
🐶 Conditioning programme to increase muscular strength.
🐶 Joint range of motion plan to improve mobility.
🐶 Stability and Proprioceptive exercises to maximise balance and co-ordination.

🐶Meet Alfie! Alfie is a geriatric patient here at AquaPaws recovering from his recent surgery to his rupture cranial cruciate ligament.

💧The outcome of your dogs function post-surgery is hugely dependent on the rehabilitation making it a crucial part of your dogs recovery, especially in senior dogs like Alfie where strength and mobility may already be compromised due to age. Elbow dysplasia is a developmental abnormality at the dogs elbow joint meaning it doesn’t form correctly 🐶

This can lead to symptoms such as:
🐕 Forelimb lameness.
🐕 Stiffness at the elbow.
🐕 Reluctance to move and enjoy activities such as running or playing.
🐕 Swelling at the elbow joint.
🐕 Reduced joint range of motion.
