The Friarage Hospital serves a population of 122,000 people covering an area of 1,000 square miles across Hambleton, Richmondshire and parts of Harrogate. Maternity services at the Friarage underwent changes in 2014 and we now have a fantastic maternity centre which we are trying to encourage as many people as possible to use. This page has been created to improve local peoples knowledge on the Friarage Maternity Centre and the services that we offer. We encourage you to use this page to share feedback on your experience and leave your reviews in order to help future women make an informed choice about where they would like to have their baby. We would also like people to share information about local events/services for pregnant women, new mums and babies such as breastfeeding groups, pregnancy yoga, aqua natal classes etc. The Friarage Maternity Centre consists of the Midwifery Led Unit, Community Midwifery Hub and Maternity Day Unit. The Midwifery Led Unit offers a relaxed, home from home environment, suitable for low risk women and their families. We are a team of highly skilled and experienced midwives who are passionate about providing one to one, individualised care. Continuous support in labour is associated with less use of pharmacological analgesia, fewer operative births and fewer reports of dissatisfaction with birth. At our unit a one to one midwifery model is adopted in labour and includes assisting women in their choice of many pharmacological methods of pain relief such as oral analgesia, entonox and meptid injections. We also support with non-pharmacological methods of pain relief such as the birthing pool, aromatherapy, massage, sterile water injections, breathing and relaxation techniques, positions and movement etc. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence confirms that midwifery led care during labour is SAFEST for women with straightforward pregnancies. Evidence suggests women who planned birth in a midwifery led unit have significantly fewer interventions including substantially fewer caesarean sections and more 'normal births' than women who planned birth in an obstetric unit. Birth partners are welcome to stay in our en-suite rooms during and after the birth until you choose to go home, usually within 24 hours. Open and flexible visiting applies. The Friarage Maternity Day unit offers care from early pregnancy onwards dealing with a broad range of pregnancy related conditions and problems. It offers a multidisciplinary team and has close communication between the GP's, community midwives. The Friarage Community Hub offers a wide range of services for ante natal and postnatal care. These include antenatal classes and appointments, postnatal checks, baby weighing's, bloodspot tests, hearing screening, open access to breastfeeding support and much more.

Thank you Georgina for your lovely feedback! Congratulations to you all on the birth of baby Mollie, our biggest August baby👶🏼🩷

“Just wanted to send some photos of Mollie Eliza born on 26th August 🥰💕
She was your heaviest little girl born in August at 8ib 15oz and we are all besotted with her!
I couldn’t have asked for a better birth and all the midwives involved were absolutely amazing from start to finish! But a huge thankyou to Sophia and Student Emma who were by my side and amazing throughout! After a stressful long labour with my son at James Cook, I was desperate to be at the Friarage this time! They were pushing induction as she was measuring large and I was worried my dreams of the Friarage were gone again… But my dreams came true when my waters broke and the ladies at the friarage said they’d happily have me!
I had my little girl in the water and it was just perfect, we didn’t know the gender so she was a beautiful surprise and is just perfect 🩷
My son Jensen is so gentle with her and I’m sure they’ll both be running rings around me in no time! I’m trying to soak up these early days while I can 💙🩷
Thankyou all again! You’ve made my experience so positive and empowering that I’d almost do it all again 🤣💕 xx”

We’re at it again, raising funds for our lovely birthing unit at the Friarage Maternity Centre. Emma and Tracey are training hard for the upcoming Great North run in September of this year. Both starting from the Couch to 5K to the daunting challenge of the GNR, but for a very worthy cause.
Money raised from The Hadrians Wall charity walk have gone towards refurbishing our old theatre making it in to a lovely space for maternity classes and workshops, however the room has no access to open windows and therefore gets incredibly hot in the summer months.
It would be amazing to raise money towards purchasing some fans to help make a more comfortable environment in both the theatre and our birthing rooms for our pregnant ladies and their partners.
The Friarage Maternity Centre Team appreciate and thank you all for your ongoing support.

Not quite a birth story, more an appreciation post
In Dec 19 and July 22 I was fortunate enough to give birth to my babies at the Friarage and so when I fell pregnant with my third it was a no brainer… that’s where we were heading!

Passing the 40week mark wasn’t strange territory for me, both my children had been ‘late’ so feeling pretty relaxed off I headed for a sweep, after sweep, after sweep.. and approaching 42 weeks I had some decisions to make. The team were attentive, supportive and caring as every few days I headed in for checks and conversations about how me and my baby were.

My body, my baby, my choice is always where I’ve been and so to be fully supported and cared for in this instance was incredible. Most pregnant ladies will have heard “oh they won’t let you go over…” a few times towards the end of pregnancy and in some cases I know that the advice is absolutely to opt for an induced labour but an informed choice is and was always my most favoured approach.
This can be a scary time and not for the faint hearted as you hear horror stories, hormones raging the fear can get to you but I didn’t feel alone.. Sophia supported me, made sure I knew my choices, referred to drs when necessary to have further discussions and continued the checks on me and baby, I felt well looked after and cared for in my choice to wait for a natural labour. Please remember my previous pregnancies went past this point without complication, I obviously just don’t let my babies out ‘on time’.
Policy stated that I couldn’t have my son at the Friarage as I went past 42weeks and so I birthed at James Cook without complication and had a lovely experience.
It seems strange to be posting about the Friarage you may think but I am honestly so grateful for the service and care there. A maternity centre isn’t for everyone I understand that but to some, me included it has supported and cared for me and the safe arrival of my babies. The most precious things in my life and the most incredible times, free for fear but full of love and protection. A truly magical time. Continued in comments…
