Have you thought about using Entonox in labour?

😌 Entonox Gas or 'Gas and Air' is a combination of 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen providing the inhalational analgaesia.

How it works

You breathe in (inhale) the Entonox through a mouthpiece.

It takes 15 to 20 seconds to work.

It works best if you use it at the start of a contraction and take long, deep breaths.

You can use Entonox at any time during labour.

Using Entonox will not take the pain away completely but will help reduce it.

It also helps to focus on your breathing.

Using Entonox is a rapid method of pain relief, can provide a feeling of relaxation, wears of quickly once you stopped inhaling it, and is easy to use in labour no matter the position you are in, if you're in a pool or not.

For some women using Entonox could leave them with a dry mouth, vertigo, lethargy, vomiting, nausea or feeling light headed.

Prodromal labour consists of contractions that can be fairly regular (between 5-10 minutes apart) and can be intense like active labour contractions.

This type of labour typically comes hours, days, or weeks before active labour begins.

During prodromal labour contractions, it is important to make sure you REST.

Other things you could do to cope with this type of labour:

Take a warm shower
Try to get some sleep
Munch on some snacks
Drink water
Take a short, leisurely walk.
Do things that calm you: read a book, listen to music, meditate.

🀱 Recovering from a Caesarean birth / C-section requires special care.

🌟 Wear high-waisted cotton underwear to avoid irritation on your incision.

🌟 Practice deep breathing to aid core and pelvic floor recovery.

🌟 Use silicone strips and massage to optimise scar healing.

🌟 Stay proactive about avoiding constipation and pressure on your incision area.

Follow your provider's instructions for a comfortable recovery.

πŸ€” What to do if labour slows down.

If contractions lose steam, assess external factors - dim the lights, limit spectators, and play your favourite calming music.

Staying hydrated is key to maintaining energy. Ensure there is always plenty of water /drink at hand.

Ni**le stimulation and skin contact release oxytocin to help the natural process.

Shift positions to whatever feels right. Try something else.

Sometimes the best solution is to do nothing - rest in a quiet space, and let your body tune into labour's rhythm.
When stresses and worries creep in, remember to breathe. Your strength through this amazing transformation can't be measured.

πŸ§šβ€β™€οΈ Trust yourself and the process. You've got this !

4️⃣ ways to assess labour progression without vaginal examination:

β€’ The purple line - as the baby descends, a red/purplish (or brown) line creeps up from the a**s to the top of the natal cleft in between the bottom cheeks. The darker the line, the further along the labour.

β€’ Rhombus of Michaelis - View the shape of the lower back/pelvis. As labour progresses, the space at the top of the rhombus visibly narrows.

β€’ Listen to mum - Her vocalizations change as labour intensifies. In active labour, noises intensify as each contraction peaks.

β€’ Observe mum's behavior - Notice her movements.
Rocking, pacing, kneeling are signs that labour is advancing. Later stages bring more vocalization and focus inward as birthing nears.

🚫 Early labour mistakes you'll want to avoid:

β€’ Not resting enough. It's important to conserve your energy in early labour by resting between contractions. Take naps, relax, watch a film, and don't overexert yourself.

β€’ Not eating and drinking. Stay hydrated and keep your energy up by having small, easily digestible foods and snacks and drinks during early labour. This will give you the energy you need for active labour.

β€’ Going to the hospital or birthing centre too soon. It's best to stay home as long as you possibly can. Heading in too early can slow things down or even stop the labour. Have you even considered giving birth at home ?

πŸ”Ž Recent research has proved that home birth has significantly more positive outcomes compared to hospital births.

Check out this Cochrane Systematic Review:
