February is AMD Awareness Month

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition and one of the leading causes of sight loss in people over 60. It affects central vision, which can make everyday activities like reading, recognising faces and watching TV more challenging. There are two main types of AMD, dry and wet. While there is currently no cure, treatments are available for wet AMD, and early detection along with healthy lifestyle changes can help slow progression.

At NAB, we’re here to support you every step of the way after an AMD diagnosis. We offer clear, accessible information about eye conditions, support from Eye Clinic Liaison Officers, home visits from our Community Support team, and opportunities to connect with others through social groups and our monthly book clubs.

This AMD Awareness Month, why not book an eye test and raise some awareness. Early action can protect sight and make a real difference.

For advice or support, call NAB on 01604 719193

Time to Talk Day is all about encouraging open conversations around mental health. Talking really does make a difference, especially for people with sight loss, who are more likely to experience mental health challenges, particularly after a diagnosis.

Bottling things up can make problems feel bigger, but opening up helps reduce stigma and reminds us we’re not alone. At NAB, we’re here to listen. From our Eye Clinic Liaison Officers, to our Befriending service and monthly social groups, support is available whenever you need it.

A small gesture can mean a lot, a cuppa, a phone call, or simply checking in with someone you care about. This Time to Talk Day, let’s reach out, listen, and get the conversation started.

Need support? Call our friendly team on 01604 719193

He’s Done It!

The biggest congratulations to Carl Peach for completing his 10 Million Step Challenge!
On the 1st April 2024, a midnight walk around Pitsford Reservoir kicked off a completely unique challenge that captured the imagination of us all at NAB.
22 months later, Carl was joined by family, friends, and supporters for an emotional final walk around Wicksteed Park.

With over 4,500 miles covered, Carl has inspired so many people and raised over £4,000 for NAB. His efforts will mean so many more visually impaired individuals can receive the kind of support that helped Carl overcome his sight loss and live life to the full.

You can still support Carl at his fundraiser here: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/10millionstepchallenge

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma is one of the most common causes of sight loss in the UK, yet around half of those affected don’t know they have it. This is because it often develops slowly and without early symptoms. Regular NHS eye tests are the only way to detect glaucoma early and help protect your vision.

While there is no cure, early treatment can slow progression and may prevent further sight loss. If you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma, or know someone who has, NAB is here to support you. We offer help from our Eye Clinic Liaison Officers, practical advice, information, home visits, helpful equipment and friendly social groups.

This Glaucoma Awareness Month, book an eye test and help spread awareness.
To find out more about how we can help, call 01604 719193.

World Braille Day – January 4, 2026

World Braille Day is held every year on January 4 to mark the birthday of Louis Braille, who invented the braille system at just 15 years old. Over 200 years later, braille is still a vital tool for blind and visually impaired people to access reading, learning and communication.

Why braille matters
Braille allows people to read independently, label everyday items and access information without needing help. Many people now use braille through digital tools like braille displays and braille-enabled tablets, but physical braille books are still much loved by many.

How to get involved
You can support World Braille Day by raising awareness, encouraging someone to learn braille or volunteering with a charity like NAB. Even learning the braille alphabet can help someone read labels or signs and feel more independent.

To find out about volunteering opportunities, call NAB on 01604 719193. Let’s celebrate braille and the freedom it brings.
