World Braille Day – January 4, 2026
World Braille Day is held every year on January 4 to mark the birthday of Louis Braille, who invented the braille system at just 15 years old. Over 200 years later, braille is still a vital tool for blind and visually impaired people to access reading, learning and communication.
Why braille matters
Braille allows people to read independently, label everyday items and access information without needing help. Many people now use braille through digital tools like braille displays and braille-enabled tablets, but physical braille books are still much loved by many.
How to get involved
You can support World Braille Day by raising awareness, encouraging someone to learn braille or volunteering with a charity like NAB. Even learning the braille alphabet can help someone read labels or signs and feel more independent.
To find out about volunteering opportunities, call NAB on 01604 719193. Let’s celebrate braille and the freedom it brings.
