Meet Lola🐾

Lola’s owner travels all the way from Surrey for Lola to have Physiotherapy with us at FP Animal Therapy Centre.

Lola has been attending sessions at FP Animal Therapy Centre since 2023 where she was originally referred due to suspected Lumbar pain but most recently her sessions have been focused on treating a biceps tear in her right forelimb. Our main treatment goal for Lola is to strengthen her bicep.

Isn’t she such a gorgeous girl?🥰🐾

Understanding PainTrace®

Here’s a video of what a PainTrace® appointment will look like.

Seeing Your Pet’s Pain
PainTrace® is a safe, non-invasive device that helps us understand and track your pet’s pain. Using tiny sensors on the skin, it measures the body’s natural signals when your pet feels discomfort.

This allows us to:
• See where your pet hurts – pinpointing areas of pain more accurately as shown in the video by the yellow and purple lines.
• Track improvement – by repeating the test after treatment, we can see if interventions like medication,
physiotherapy, or surgery are working.
• Plan the best care – the results help us tailor treatments and monitor progress over time.

PainTrace® gives us a clearer picture of your pet’s pain. It is particularly useful for the more stoic pets who give less pain signs or those more complicated cases.

If you are interested then please contact us.

Meet the very handsome Teddy🐾

Teddy was referred to us in July after being diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia. As part of Teddy’s rehabilitation program, he comes to us for underwater treadmill therapy, physiotherapy, laser therapy and he has also had some acupuncture with our visiting vet, James.

Our goals for Teddy are to increase his range of motion, relieve tension and increase his muscle mass.

Teddy is the sweetest boy and we can’t wait to see his progress in the coming weeks.

Well done, Teddy🌟🐾

Dilly showing us just how much she loves her Hydrotherapy sessions. Turned around for one second and she’s confidently back in the underwater treadmill ready to start all over again!🌟🐾

Dilly was referred to us after her owner noticed she was lame in her right forelimb. Previously Dilly had fractured her digit 5 on her right forelimb so her owner suspected this may have been the cause.

Dilly attends both regular Hydrotherapy and Physiotherapy appointments as part of her rehabilitation program where we aim to improve her range of motion, reduce pain and increase muscle mass.

Pool vs Underwater Treadmill🐾

We often get asked by our clients what is the difference between the pool and treadmill?

Both offer significant benefits, but they serve slightly different purposes depending on your dog’s individual needs. It is very important to have the option of both so we can accommodate every dog’s needs.

Pool Hydrotherapy
What it involves:
During a pool session, your dog swims in a controlled, heated hydrotherapy pool under the guidance and support of a trained therapist. This form of exercise is non weight bearing, making it suitable for dogs who require gentle activity.

Key benefits:
-Builds overall muscle strength, mass and endurance
-Improves cardiovascular fitness
-Enhances joint flexibility and range of motion
-Aids weight management and supports healthy body condition

Patients who would benefit from the pool:
-Arthritic dogs especially multi limb arthritis
-Older dogs needing gentle, low impact exercise
-Overweight dogs who require safe conditioning
-Dogs needing fitness and conditioning programmes especially sporting dogs

Underwater Treadmill Therapy
What it involves:
In underwater treadmill sessions, your dog walks on a submerged treadmill with the water level and speed adjusted to their individual requirements. The therapist can aide the dog with different supports and sometimes even moving the limbs. The buoyancy reduces weight-bearing on joints this is effected by the height of the water, the higher the water level the less weight on joints. The resistance helps strengthen muscles especially core and improve mobility in a controlled environment.

Key benefits:
-Facilitates controlled, progressive rehabilitation after injury or surgery
-Encourages correct gait patterns and joint movement
-Improves balance, coordination, and proprioception
-Targets specific muscle groups for strengthening

Patients who would benefit from UWTM:
-Post-operative rehabilitation (e.g. cruciate ligament repair, orthopaedic and neuro surgeries)
-Neurological conditions requiring gait re-education
-Dogs with mobility or balance challenges
-Targeted strengthening and conditioning programmes

It is important to note that trained therapists should be in the water with your dog to make the session as beneficial and safe as possible.

Our treatments are tailored to your dog’s specific condition. Following a thorough assessment, we will create a treatment plan that best supports their recovery and treatment goals.

Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO)

One of the most common post op cases we treat at FP Animal Therapy Centre.

What is TPLO surgery?

TPLO stands for Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy. This is a surgical procedure commonly used when a patient has ruptured their cranial cruciate ligament. The cranial cruciate ligament stops too much forward movement of the knee. The surgery involves changing the angle of the top of the tibia (the tibial plateau) by cutting it, then rotating it and then stabilising it in the new position with screws and a plate.

How does a TPLO work?

When a patient has ruptured a cruciate ligament this causes the knee to become unstable. Therefore when the dog weight bears on the affected limb this instability causes the tibia to move forward which gives the feeling of the knee giving way and results in the patient becoming lame.

TPLO surgery stabilises the tibia and prevents too much movement forewords, even with the ligament ruptured.

How can FP Animal Therapy Centre help?

Both Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy play a huge role following surgery.

At FP Animal Therapy Centre we tailor our treatment programs to each patient. Physiotherapy can help with restoring function and reducing pain and Hydrotherapy focusing on building muscle mass, as well as, educating and improving gait.

If you feel your dog would benefit from our services. Please get in touch today.
