This is a bespoke course for registered Nova Scotia Podiatrists seeking refresher or competency documentation in microbiology, histology, laboratory investigations and related clinical decision-making; however, international podiatrists are welcome to attend the taught (online) element of the course.

Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Identify when and why, and how to order key microbiological, mycological, and haematological investigations.
2. Demonstrate appropriate collection, labelling, and transport techniques for wound, tissue, nail, and skin specimens.
3. Interpret common laboratory results in the context of podiatric presentations.
4. Integrate diagnostic findings with clinical reasoning to guide treatment plans, including antimicrobial and antifungal stewardship.
5. Comply with Nova Scotia Health specimen handling and CPSNS documentation standards.

Course format
● Lectures (online)
● Video demonstration
● Interactive case review

The taught module comprises two subject areas:
●Part 1: Wound, Tissue, and Microbiology Sampling
●Part 2: Haematology and Basic Laboratory Tests

The link to the online element will be emailed out in April.

Assessment (NS pods only):
● Application: case-based discussion or short written reflection
● Skills: practical technique checklist
● Knowledge: 50-item MCQ on ordering rationale and interpretation
