Disability Positive

Disability Positive We are Disability Positive. We help people with disability and long-term health conditions to live well. We provide you with services, opportunities and a voice.

We are a charity based in Cheshire and work mostly in the North West. The social model of disability is the starting point for everything we do and is the idea that people are not disabled by their condition, but by a world that doesn’t meet their needs. We have services to help you with everyday life, being part of your local community and looking after your wellbeing. We can offer advice, help with practical tasks and advocate for you in lots of situations. We listen and share your experiences to influence positive change in government policy. We know it matters, because we live with disability and long-term health conditions too. Visit www.disabilitypositive.org to find out more.

It was a pleasure to attend the event last week.

The event brought together professionals, organisations and leaders from across the sector, including speeches from board members, executive leaders and the Mayor. One particularly memorable moment focused on inclusion and the powerful impact music can have on people living with dementia, bringing everyone together to sing and clap along.

It was also a great opportunity to connect with social workers and partner organisations, including boltonmusicservice and Bolton College health and wellbeing teams and local agencies.

We were especially pleased to hear such positive feedback about our services from social workers and others, with one commenting: “It’s lovely to put a face to the name, you are both always so lovely and respond quickly with any queries we have.”

It was wonderful to be part of such a positive event and to hear how our work is making a difference. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and feedback. 💜

Our Volunteer Co-ordinator, Cate, recently attended the Volunteer Fair at University of Chester, sharing information about how students can get involved with Disability Positive.

Events like this are a great opportunity to connect with people who are passionate about making a difference and to talk about the impact volunteering can have, both within our community and for personal development.

Volunteers are at the heart of Disability Positive, helping us remove barriers, build inclusion and support people across our services.

If you’re interested in volunteering with us, we’d love to hear from you. 💜

International Women’s Day. 💜

Today we celebrate the strength, resilience and leadership of women everywhere - including disabled women, neurodivergent women, and women living with long-term health conditions.

We recognise the barriers that still exist, and we celebrate the voices that continue to challenge them. Inclusion must include disabled women in leadership, in decision-making, and in shaping the future.

At Disability Positive, lived experience drives change. Today, we honour the women in our community who advocate, support, lead and inspire every day.

Together, we continue breaking barriers and building a more inclusive world. 🌸

The number of people with lived experience of disability or a long-term health condition is increasing, and so is the need for true inclusion.

Over the last decade, the percentage of UK residents reporting a disability has risen from around 19% to nearly 25%. That’s 1 in 4 people.

This rise reflects greater awareness, longer life expectancy, evolving health needs, and more people feeling confident to recognise and report their lived experience of disability or a long-term health condition.

What it does tell us is this:
✔️ Inclusive services aren’t optional
✔️ Accessible environments matter more than ever
✔️ Supportive organisations like Disability Positive play a crucial role

As more people live with disabling conditions, society must adapt, not the other way around.

At Disability Positive, we provide practical support, social connection, training and advocacy so disabled people can live the life they choose. Find out more on our website.

Here’s what your child or young person could get up to with support from Community Connections.

From swimming sessions and climbing walls to horse riding adventures, these moments are about so much more than the activity itself. They’re about confidence, independence, new experiences and feeling part of something.

Our Community Connections Service supports children and young people with lived experience of disability or a long-term health condition to access inclusive, meaningful activities in their local community, while also giving families valuable time to recharge.

Find out more about Community Connections on our website. >> https://zurl.co/LPiX6.

Children learn more than we realise from what they watch.

Representation on children’s TV doesn’t just entertain - it shapes how young minds understand difference, disability and belonging. When disabled characters and diverse communication styles are shown naturally on screen, children grow up seeing inclusion as normal, not exceptional.

From characters like Rex in PAW Patrol and Julia in Sesame Street, to inclusive storytelling in Bluey and across CBeebies, representation helps build empathy, confidence and acceptance from an early age.

Inclusion doesn’t need a “special episode.” It needs visibility.

Which characters have helped start important conversations in your family? Tell us in the comments.

Disability Equality Training isn’t about ticking boxes, it’s about understanding, confidence and meaningful organisational change.

At Disability Positive, our training is led by lived experience and grounded in the social model of disability. We work with organisations to challenge assumptions, remove barriers and build more inclusive workplaces and services.

Our training helps organisations to:
✔️ better understand disability and long-term health conditions
✔️ recognise and remove barriers
✔️ build confidence in inclusive practice
✔️ create cultures rooted in dignity, respect and accessibility

Whether you’re an employer, service provider or organisation wanting to do better, Disability Equality Training is a practical step towards real inclusion.

After asking you last month where inclusion still needs to grow, many of you shared powerful, honest experiences. From access to disabled parking, to booking GP appointments, to online systems that don’t work for people with complex needs, and the need for more quiet, sensory-aware spaces - your responses highlight where barriers still exist in everyday life.

These aren’t small issues. They affect independence, dignity, health and connection. And they remind us that inclusion isn’t just about intentions - it’s about how services, spaces and systems actually work for people.

At Disability Positive, lived experience drives everything we do. Your voices help shape our advocacy, inform our conversations with organisations, and strengthen the case for change.

Together, we can keep highlighting what needs to change - and push for systems that work for everyone.

Did you miss your opportunity to tell us where inclusion still needs to grow? Please share yours in the comments. 💜

Looking back at a lovely day spent at the beach with some of our volunteers and Good Company group members - enjoying fresh air, laughter and time together. Moments like these remind us how powerful connection, community and shared experiences can be.

Alongside Good Company, we also run a range of other groups, including Buzz, Tarporley Social Circle and our wider Community Connections, all designed to help people feel included, supported and part of something meaningful.

Whether it’s social activities, days out, or simply spending time with others who understand, our groups are about belonging and enjoying life together.

Trustee Spotlight: Judy.

We’re proud to shine a light on Judy, who has been a trustee at Disability Positive for the past six years.

Judy’s commitment, insight and passion for inclusion have played an important role in guiding our organisation, helping ensure that lived experience, strong values and community impact remain at the heart of everything we do.

Our trustees help shape our direction, strengthen our governance and champion the voices of disabled people and those living with long-term health conditions, and Judy’s contribution over the years has made a real difference.

Thank you, Judy, for your time, dedication and belief in Disability Positive.
