Disability Positive

Disability Positive We are Disability Positive. We help people with disability and long-term health conditions to live well. We provide you with services, opportunities and a voice.

We are a charity based in Cheshire and work mostly in the North West. The social model of disability is the starting point for everything we do and is the idea that people are not disabled by their condition, but by a world that doesn’t meet their needs. We have services to help you with everyday life, being part of your local community and looking after your wellbeing. We can offer advice, help with practical tasks and advocate for you in lots of situations. We listen and share your experiences to influence positive change in government policy. We know it matters, because we live with disability and long-term health conditions too. Visit www.disabilitypositive.org to find out more.

There’s been recent coverage in the news highlighting the barriers disabled people still face with public transport. In one case, it was reported that in a particular area, only 2 out of 15 train stations had lifts to the platforms.

Accessibility signs on buses and trains are important - but real inclusion is about whether people can actually travel safely, comfortably and independently.

For many disabled people, transport remains one of the biggest everyday barriers. From broken ramps and inaccessible stations to unclear communication and a lack of support, these challenges can make even simple journeys stressful or impossible.

Accessible transport isn’t a luxury - it’s access to healthcare, work, education, family and community.

We’d love to hear from you: What’s your experience of public transport? What works well, and what still needs to change? 💬

Did you know accessible workplaces make economic sense?

Most reasonable adjustments cost employers under £500 - yet they can significantly improve retention, productivity and workplace culture.

And closing the disability employment gap could add billions to the UK economy.

Inclusion isn’t just ethical, it’s commercially smart.

If your organisation wants to build confidence, improve accessibility and create a better experience for employees and customers, our Business Services team can help.

We offer:
✔ Disability Confidence Training
✔ Disability Equality Training
✔ Customer Experience support
✔ Practical guidance on removing workplace barriers

Spring is here, and so are new adventures! 🌸

Longer days, brighter skies and fresh air mean more opportunities to get outside, explore and connect.

Spending time outdoors can build confidence, support wellbeing and create meaningful moments of fun and friendship. Whether it’s nature walks, outdoor games or community activities, spring is the perfect time to try something new.

At Disability Positive, we’re proud to support inclusive opportunities that help children feel confident, connected and part of their community. Let’s make this season one of growth, movement and belonging. 💜

For many people, small changes can make a huge difference, such as clear communication, flexible working, sensory awareness, time to process information, and being listened to without judgment.

Inclusion isn’t about adding a policy to a handbook. It’s about creating cultures where different ways of thinking and working are valued - not merely accommodated.

This Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we’re encouraging organisations to move beyond awareness and towards meaningful change.

What do you wish organisations understood? Share your thoughts in the comments. 💬

Every brain works differently, and that’s something to celebrate.

For some children, wearing earphones can help reduce sensory overwhelm, improve focus and make activities more enjoyable. Small adjustments like this can make a big difference.

Neurodivergent children don’t need to change who they are to fit into the world. The world needs to become more understanding, flexible and inclusive.

When we listen, adapt and remove barriers, children can thrive in ways that feel right for them. This week, we celebrate different ways of thinking, learning and experiencing the world.

What adjustments have made a positive difference for you or your child? 💬

As we mark the start of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we’re reminded that different ways of thinking, learning and experiencing the world aren’t deficits; they are strengths.

Neurodivergent people bring creativity, innovation, problem-solving and perspective to our communities and workplaces. When environments are inclusive and barriers are removed, everyone benefits.

This week, we celebrate difference, challenge stigma and champion organisational change that makes inclusion the norm, not the exception.

What does neurodiversity mean to you? 💬

We’re shining a light on our wonderful trustee, Jackson, and the valuable role he plays behind the scenes at Disability Positive.

Trustees help guide the strategic direction of our organisation, ensuring we stay focused on inclusion, accountability and creating meaningful change. Their insight, experience and dedication help us continue removing barriers and strengthening our services for the community.

Jackson’s commitment to Disability Positive reflects the passion and care that sits at the heart of everything we do.

Thank you, Jackson, for the time, leadership and perspective you bring to our Board. 💜
