When you're stressed, cortisol builds up in your body. But for a lot of us, we just have to keep going until the stressful event is over. You have to survive that moment.

Then the adrenaline wears off. You finally stop and slow down and it's like your body goes, "Okay cool, we're safe now. We've got time. Let's fall apart."

The key is awareness and planning ahead. If you know you've got a busy, stressful time coming up or a big day out, put a recovery day in your calendar. Your body will thank you💛

Emily would get home from work, go straight to the bathroom to get changed, and enter a trance-like state. The worst time was getting ready for bed, she was using skin picking as sleep procrastination. She'd pick for ages until she was bleeding, then fall asleep disgusted with herself 💔

We did the subconscious work to address the emotional need being met by the habit. We found healthy replacements for that behaviour that would still release the social anxiety.

Now Emily has broken the habit. She still has the urge sometimes, but she can interrupt the pattern. She's no longer spending hours in front of the mirror, wasting her evening. She doesn't have anxiety about the bathroom anymore. She's going to bed earlier and sleeping more 💛

In my previous relationship, I was excited that he was building a bike and I'd get to be a backpack. That never happened.

At first, I was looking for a new partner who was also into bikes.

Then I realised, screw needing a guy, I can ride my own bike.

I know how dangerous the roads are and I don't take it lightly. But this is also an experience I want to have. Who knows if I'll ever get my full license or not, I'm taking it one step at a time.

Knowing I can do anything I want, alone, is a new sense of empowerment.

Of course, sometimes I wish I didn't *have* to do these things alone, and I do crave connection. That's only human, and normal after divorce. Self-compassion ❤️‍🩹 and then, onto the next challenge or goal.
