Care Provider Brings Relief to Families in Scotland's Highlands and Welsh Valleys
Families struggling to find reliable live-in care for elderly relatives in remote areas of Scotland and Wales now have a lifeline, thanks to a Norfolk-based company that specialises in locations other providers won't serve.
Able Community Care Ltd, founded by Angela Gifford in 1980, has built its 45-year reputation on providing dependable care in the Scottish Highlands, Welsh valleys and other rural communities where finding quality live-in support can seem impossible.
"Many care agencies simply won't operate in remote areas," explains Angela. "They see the distance, the travel logistics, and the challenges, and they say no. We've always said yes. For 45 years, we've been connecting families with excellent carers in places other providers consider too difficult."
The company operates as an introductory agency, acting as facilitators who arrange everything for clients. Families choose their own carers from self-employed professionals, many of whom have worked with the company for over a decade. With a 24-hour on-call system and daily support emails to all carers, reliability is guaranteed.
"Our reliability is 100%," says Angela. "We only lose clients through bereavement or if they sadly run out of funds, never because they're dissatisfied. When you're caring for someone in a remote Highland cottage or a Welsh valley farmhouse, that reliability matters even more."
For families living in cities while elderly parents remain in rural family homes, the worry can be overwhelming. Able Community Care provides peace of mind by connecting clients with experienced carers who understand the unique challenges of remote living.
The financial aspect is equally compelling. With minimum wage rising to £12.71 per hour from April 1st 2026, agencies that employ carers face wage costs alone of £2,135.28 per week before employment costs and fees. Able Community Care's all-inclusive service ranges from £1,300-£1,700 per week, covering the carer's payment, travel allowance, food allowance, agency fee and VAT.
Approved by the Jersey Care Commission, the company's standards are proven across challenging locations and jurisdictions. "Whether it's a croft in the Highlands or a cottage in the Brecon Beacons, we understand what's needed".
The company also runs a community protection initiative, having distributed 300,000 free 'Do Not Knock' door stickers to protect elderly people from doorstep scammers. Started in 2019 after |Angela’s own stepmother complained about cold callers, the stickers are available free to anyone who requests them.
