Able Community Care

Able Community Care Trusted for 45 years, Able Community Care provides 24 hour live-in care services. A real alternative to moving into a residential care setting.

Nationwide support including in rural and remote locations. Visit www.ablecommunitycare.com for details Able Community Care, established in 1980, offers a real alternative to residential care providing live-in care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We care for people in England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands. Our live-in care service gives back independance and the security of knowing there is always someone close at hand. Our rotational live-in care system offers people with high dependency care needs (or low dependency needs but also requiring companionship), a one to one live-in care service in their own homes, thereby eliminating the need for them to move into a residential home setting. Personal assessment, evaluating cost, care monitoring, quality of service monitoring, risk assessment and reviews are all part of the care package. We offer a variety of care packages which include long term live-in care, short term respite care, home from hospital care and holiday companion care. Able Community Care conducts business out of its head office in Norfolk, situated just outside Norwich in an attractive renovated building called 'The Old Parish Rooms' on the outskirts of Whitlingham Country Park since moving to the premises in 2003. Staff who work from our head office are divided into various departments which include Senior Managers, Care Managers and Recruitment, Administration and Marketing Teams. We additionally have two regional representatives; one who covers south west England and Wales, and the other who covers the south and south east of England.

Care Provider Brings Relief to Families in Scotland's Highlands and Welsh Valleys

Families struggling to find reliable live-in care for elderly relatives in remote areas of Scotland and Wales now have a lifeline, thanks to a Norfolk-based company that specialises in locations other providers won't serve.
Able Community Care Ltd, founded by Angela Gifford in 1980, has built its 45-year reputation on providing dependable care in the Scottish Highlands, Welsh valleys and other rural communities where finding quality live-in support can seem impossible.
"Many care agencies simply won't operate in remote areas," explains Angela. "They see the distance, the travel logistics, and the challenges, and they say no. We've always said yes. For 45 years, we've been connecting families with excellent carers in places other providers consider too difficult."
The company operates as an introductory agency, acting as facilitators who arrange everything for clients. Families choose their own carers from self-employed professionals, many of whom have worked with the company for over a decade. With a 24-hour on-call system and daily support emails to all carers, reliability is guaranteed.
"Our reliability is 100%," says Angela. "We only lose clients through bereavement or if they sadly run out of funds, never because they're dissatisfied. When you're caring for someone in a remote Highland cottage or a Welsh valley farmhouse, that reliability matters even more."
For families living in cities while elderly parents remain in rural family homes, the worry can be overwhelming. Able Community Care provides peace of mind by connecting clients with experienced carers who understand the unique challenges of remote living.
The financial aspect is equally compelling. With minimum wage rising to £12.71 per hour from April 1st 2026, agencies that employ carers face wage costs alone of £2,135.28 per week before employment costs and fees. Able Community Care's all-inclusive service ranges from £1,300-£1,700 per week, covering the carer's payment, travel allowance, food allowance, agency fee and VAT.
Approved by the Jersey Care Commission, the company's standards are proven across challenging locations and jurisdictions. "Whether it's a croft in the Highlands or a cottage in the Brecon Beacons, we understand what's needed".
The company also runs a community protection initiative, having distributed 300,000 free 'Do Not Knock' door stickers to protect elderly people from doorstep scammers. Started in 2019 after |Angela’s own stepmother complained about cold callers, the stickers are available free to anyone who requests them.
For care enquiries, contact Able Community Care on 01603 764567, email info@ablecommunitycare.com or visit ablecommunitycare.com. For free door stickers, email info@ablecommunitycare.com. All enquiries answered within 24 hours.

Ask for Angela

The Ask for Angela safety project, launched in 2016, is a nationally recognised, not-for-profit initiative used by bars, pubs, clubs, and other venues to help anyone who feels unsafe, vulnerable, or threatened. It allows individuals to discreetly signal staff by asking for “Angela,” indicating they need help without drawing attention or escalating the situation. Trained staff then provide assistance, such as calling a taxi, contacting friends, or removing the person causing distress. Many large chains and independent venues participate and may display posters to indicate involvement.
If you have contacts in the hospitality industry and they have not heard of Ask for Angela you may like to direct them to the Ask for Angela website.

Received from a family member of a client:
To whom it may concern:
I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Able Community Care, by far the best caring company I've employed.
Their carers are of a high calibre: they demonstrate capability with compassion and efficiency with empathy . I had no hesitation in leaving them on their own: they knew what to do - and did it. The company were very understanding of my requirements and dealt with them in a most humane way.
Able Community Care really is a most caring company.

The Friday Care Tip 12th December 2025
Planning Ahead for Care: Why the Holiday Season Matters
The Christmas and New Year period often brings families together, and it's during these gatherings that relatives may notice an older loved one could benefit from care support in the coming year.
As a home care provider with over 45 years of experience, our key advice is this: whether you're considering a care home, hourly care support, or live-in care, research your options before care becomes urgently needed. Having information empowers families to make informed choices that truly suit their loved one's needs, rather than accepting whatever is available during a crisis.
What to Look for When Exploring Care Options
Here are some helpful steps to guide your research:
• Request brochures from providers you're interested in
• Speak with your GP's local nursing team for recommendations on trusted local providers
• Arrange visits to providers' homes or offices to get a feel for their service
• Ask important questions about staffing levels, carer training, and continuity of care (especially for home care arrangements)
• Understand the costs involved and what carers are paid
• Find out how the provider keeps families informed and involved in care decisions
These considerations will give you a broader perspective and help you make the right choice for your family.

Live-in Care Support – This is an alternative to moving into a residential care setting.

In the last few weeks, we have had enquiries where we have been told of live-in, care packages ranging in price from £8000+ per month to one which was in excess of £20,000 per month. In both cases, the person giving us that information, was not aware of how those figures were distributed i.e.. how much was the carers wage, how much was the agency fee, extra’s, etc.?

If you're looking for live-in care support, call us. We're committed to full transparency and will provide you with a complete breakdown of all costs.

A comment from a family member this week, of a gentleman we provided care support for:

The Live-in Carers have been exemplary in their care and attention to Dad and to the family in general. A truly difficult job, especially for the last carer to come in at such a late stage. You should be very proud of all your ladies, and look after them, they are a credit to Able Community Care.

The Friday Care Tip 27th November
An average empty Council wheelie bin weighs 20–33 lbs (9–15 kg). For many older or disabled people, once the bin is filled, moving it to the collection point, whether at the end of a path or to the pavement, can be difficult.
Most councils offer an assisted collection service for those unable to move their bins to the collection place. To request this for yourself or someone else, contact your local council, either by website or by phone and explain why the help is needed.
Most councils offer the service for all standard household waste streams, including general waste (rubbish) and various recycling bins/containers.

Traffic Light Labelling
This is part of the UK's voluntary traffic light system, which uses red, (high), amber (medium), and green (low) to show how healthy a food is at a glance.
• Red means the product is high in a nutrient and you should try to cut down, eat less often or eat smaller amounts.
• Amber means medium. If a food contains mostly amber, you can eat it most of the time.
• Green means low. The more green lights a label displays, the healthier the food is.
Approximately two-thirds of food products on UK shelves display front-of-pack nutritional labelling, commonly known as "traffic light" labelling

The Friday Care Tip
The Attendance Allowance
Estimates from several organisations advise that there are over one million people who could claim The Attendance Allowance but currently are not doing so.
The Allowance is for people aged 66 or over who have a disability or long-term health condition that requires help with personal care or supervision. It is not means-tested, so your income, savings, and capital do not affect your entitlement to claim it.
There are two rates in 2025: Higher rate £110.40 pw and Lower rate £73.90.
To apply, you will need:
• your National Insurance number.
• your address and contact details.
• details of the disability or health condition that you need extra help for.
• details of your GP surgery or medical centre.
• details of your care home, hospital or hospice if you are currently staying in one.
You can apply online at Gov.UK or if you do not have the internet you can call the helpline on 0800 731 0122 to request a paper form by post.
