It’s time to stop pouring money into a failing system ✋

Strong recovery communities aren't just compassionate, they're proven to work.
Peer support and abstinence-based programmes deliver stronger outcomes and lower healthcare costs. Yet we've defunded them and abandoned the "Forgotten Workforce" who lead them.

It's time to invest in what actually works: rebuilding recovery communities and supporting the people in long-term sobriety who know how to help others get well.

Addiction recovery isn’t always straightforward 🌀

Some days it feels strong and steady. Other days it feels overwhelming, isolating, or like you’re slipping backwards. That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean you’ve failed.

What matters is recognising the signs early, and there are practical steps that can help: reaching out to a trusted friend, revisiting the basics, being honest in counselling, or even changing your environment.

We need to change how we think about addiction and treatment 🫂

For too long, the focus has been on reducing harm instead of helping people build a fulfilling life away from addiction.

Professor Best’s “allegory of the lake” explains it simply. Most people live on the surface, but those affected by addiction often start below it and sink deeper as their addiction progresses.

The recovery approach builds strong recovery communities that help people achieve somewhere to live, someone to love and something to do. When that happens, the lake itself becomes less deep, and fewer people sink in the first place.

We’re spending millions on treatment but losing the people who deliver it.

The government has invested £532 million in recruiting new drug and alcohol treatment staff.

But with one in five leaving the sector every year, and 5,448 drug-related deaths recorded in 2023 (the highest since records began) the system is still failing the people who need it most.

As Lester Morse explains, recovery doesn’t just come from hiring professionals.
It’s investing in communities and people who have already beaten addiction, and understand what it takes to heal.
