Our health theme for January is 'limit harmful substances.' Now we all know that alcohol and smoking are bad for us, but did you know that alcohol can actually negatively affect your spinal health? Our spine requires adequate hydration for the spinal cord to properly cushion the discs to prevent injury. But alcohol causes dehydration, thus putting extra strain on our spine. We will be posting this month about Dry January, and other ways you can reduce the amount of harmful substances you consume.

A gratitude jar is an easy new years resolution and a great way to improve your mood. To start a gratitude jar, you need an empty jar, a pen and some small pieces of paper. Each day (or week) you write one thing you are grateful for on the paper, then fold it up and put it in the jar. At the end of the month (or year) you empty the jar and read all of the wonderful things you have to be grateful for. It helps to reframe negative thinking and can encourage us to focus on the positives in our lives.

Gratitude journaling is a great place to start to help you reflect and focus on the positives in each day. With practice you will find you naturally look for the good moments in your day to day life. Try putting the journal (and a nice pen!) next to your bed so there is a visual prompt for you to complete it, before sleep. A recent study published in JAMA Psychiatry shows that gratitude may increase our longevity (ie living longer!).
