Health in Menopause

Health in Menopause Our team of doctors provide specialist menopause advice to women in perimenopause, menopause, surgical menopause, early menopause and POI.

Each woman is an individual, her experience of the menopause is unique, but it needn’t be lonely. For many women symptoms start in the perimenopause and continue beyond the menopause. Hot flushes and night sweats are well known but less well known are the psychological effects of the menopause - low mood, anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog, loss of confidence etc. These can negatively impact quality of life, relationships and ability to work. Symptoms can last on average for 7-8 years but for some women they continue for decades. Throughout your appointment at Health in Menopause, our expert doctors will take time to listen and to explore how the menopause is affecting you. They will provide evidence-based advice and guidance regarding lifestyle measures to reduce your symptoms. As GPs, we are well qualified in providing holistic health care and have the experience to advise on the role of HRT in relieving the symptoms of the menopause and optimising your future health. With the correct advice, help and support this can be a positive phase of life. But if you’re struggling with symptoms and unsure what to do, book an appointment today. Don’t wait, it’s already been too long.

What are vasomotor symptoms of menopause? 🌡️

You might hear this term used a lot in menopause conversations - but what does it actually mean?

Vasomotor symptoms are caused by changes in hormones that affect how the body regulates temperature. This can lead to hot flushes, night sweats, sudden warmth in the face and chest, and disrupted sleep.

They’re one of the most common (and often the most disruptive) menopause symptoms. 😵‍💫

If you experience these, you’re not alone, and support is available.

Did you know? If you’re going to have cake, the morning is the best time to do it! 🎂

During perimenopause and menopause, fluctuating hormones can affect how your body handles sugar - so being mindful of when you eat certain foods can make a difference to your energy and overall wellbeing.

We’re always saying, it’s not about restriction, it’s about balance. And yes, there’s still room for cake! 🍰

Can menopause cause high blood pressure? 🩸

Blood pressure often rises during perimenopause and menopause as oestrogen drops and blood vessels stiffen. Add in stress, sleep changes, weight gain, and lifestyle habits, and midlife can be a risky time for heart health.

But there are things you can do to improve your blood pressure during this time. 🙌

💉 Why aren’t estradiol blood tests reliable during the menopause transition?

There are lots of factors that can affect your results - from how you take HRT, to timing, lifestyle, and even the lab that runs your test. Two tests taken on the same dose can give very different results, even in the same person.

Want to understand more about what really matters when it comes to blood testing?

Saturday marked the first-ever World POI Day, launched by to raise awareness of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI).

POI can have a significant impact on physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, yet many women still face delayed diagnosis and limited support. Causes can include autoimmune or genetic factors, cancer treatments, or surgery - but in around 90% of cases, the cause is unknown.

If your periods have stopped for over a year before the age of 40 (and other causes have been ruled out), it could be POI. Speaking with a healthcare professional who understands POI is key to getting the right care and support.

For peer support and reliable information, visit the Daisy Network, the UK charity for women with POI 🌸

Big news for menopause health! 🚨

For the first time, menopause screening will be officially included in NHS health checks in England 🇬🇧

From next year, women aged 40–74 attending their routine NHS check will be asked about menopause symptoms - helping identify those who may benefit from advice, support, or treatment such as HRT 💊

This is a welcome step towards bringing menopause into the mainstream and ensuring no woman has to “suffer in silence.” 💬

But it’s vital that everyone has equal access - uptake of health checks remains low in some communities, and progress on menopause support mustn’t leave anyone behind 🤝

Huge congratulations to our very own Dr Sarah Ball and Lindsey Lester, who took on the Ultra Challenge 50km walk along the Kent Downs on 11th October! 🚶‍♀️🏞️

Joined by friends Lisa and Nicola, they completed the 12-hour trek - starting at 8:30am and finishing just after 8:30pm - all in support of the Charity. There were plenty of laughs (and snacks!) along the way, a few blisters, and some very tired legs at the end, but an incredible achievement for an important cause. 💪💜

Globally, around 9.2 million women were diagnosed with cancer in 2022. Treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and anti-hormone therapy can cause sudden and often permanent menopause - affecting 40% of women under 40, and up to 90% of women over 40.

Research from the Menopause and Cancer Charity found that:
🌟 9 in 10 women said menopause symptoms after cancer treatment had a major impact on their quality of life.
🌟 3 in 4 didn’t receive adequate information about menopause as part of their treatment discussions.
🌟 99% felt there should be better support from healthcare professionals.

We’re so proud of Sarah, Lindsey, Lisa and Nicola for raising awareness and vital funds to help change that. 👏
