Health in Menopause

Health in Menopause Our team of doctors provide specialist menopause advice to women in perimenopause, menopause, surgical menopause, early menopause and POI.

Each woman is an individual, her experience of the menopause is unique, but it needn’t be lonely. For many women symptoms start in the perimenopause and continue beyond the menopause. Hot flushes and night sweats are well known but less well known are the psychological effects of the menopause - low mood, anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog, loss of confidence etc. These can negatively impact quality of life, relationships and ability to work. Symptoms can last on average for 7-8 years but for some women they continue for decades. Throughout your appointment at Health in Menopause, our expert doctors will take time to listen and to explore how the menopause is affecting you. They will provide evidence-based advice and guidance regarding lifestyle measures to reduce your symptoms. As GPs, we are well qualified in providing holistic health care and have the experience to advise on the role of HRT in relieving the symptoms of the menopause and optimising your future health. With the correct advice, help and support this can be a positive phase of life. But if you’re struggling with symptoms and unsure what to do, book an appointment today. Don’t wait, it’s already been too long.

Almost half of a woman’s life is lived after menopause, yet it’s still not talked about 🕧.

Pre-menopause, perimenopause and post-menopause each come with their own changes and health considerations, so understanding where you are can make a real difference to how you feel and the support you seek. 🤗

Menopause is not a brief phase, it’s a long-term life stage, and though perimenopause is short in comparison, it has a huge impact.

Perimenopause doesn’t arrive all at once, it often starts with subtle changes that are easy to dismiss 👀

You might notice changes to your periods, mood changes, brain fog or trouble concentrating, poor sleep and changes in libido 🧠.

These early symptoms are driven by fluctuating hormones and can begin years before periods stop. If things feel “off” and it’s affecting your day-to-day life, it’s worth paying attention.

At Health in Menopause, we can offer support for your perimenopause symptoms. You can also learn more about perimenopause and what to expect in our online resources 💻

A recent survey found that brain fog is the biggest mental wellbeing pressure for women over 50. 🧠

New research from BACP shows 38% of women saying brain fog has affected their mental health, with navigating menopause close behind at 34%.

We know now more than ever that menopause isn’t something to just “push through”. This survey also importantly shows that more women are seeking therapy for menopause-related anxiety, and that matters.

February is , so let us show you how oestrogen plays a powerful role in protecting your heart ❤️

There’s no better time to talk about how hormones affect heart health. From keeping blood vessels flexible, supporting healthy blood pressure, influencing cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and reducing inflammation, oestrogen really does affect all the key factors in protecting your heart and circulation.

As oestrogen levels change through perimenopause and menopause, understanding your heart health becomes even more important. Head to our online resources to learn more 💻🫀

This , we’re reminding you about an often overlooked topic of the relationship between menopause and cancer 🎗️

Cancer treatments can trigger early or sudden menopause, and for many women, navigating menopausal symptoms alongside a cancer diagnosis or recovery can feel overwhelming and isolating. Equally, concerns about hormones and cancer risk can add anxiety during perimenopause and menopause.

Last year, our very own Dr Alison Macbeth spoke at a Menopause and Cancer Charity event. As someone who has personally experienced breast cancer at menopausal age, Alison brought both her clinical expertise and her lived experience to the conversation. Her dual perspective as a doctor and patient made her contribution especially powerful in highlighting the realities of treatment-induced menopause. Conversations like these matter because women deserve clear, evidence-based information and compassionate care at every stage.

Progesterone intolerance can affect both your mind and body, and it’s more common than many realise 💭

Symptoms can include anxiety, low mood, irritability, brain fog, bloating, headaches, breast tenderness, fatigue and skin changes. Some women notice symptoms while taking Utrogestan, or in the first few months after a Mirena coil is fitted.

The good news? There are options. Adjusting how progesterone is taken, trying a different type, or making supportive lifestyle changes can really help. Before giving up on HRT, it’s important to get the right advice.

Our very own Dr Sarah Ball is running the on 26th April! 🏃‍♀️✨

She’s running in aid of the and alongside menopause PT , who is running for 🧠. Together, they’re highlighting the importance of mental health in menopause and raising funds to support vital research and education in this area 🙌

Sarah says: “When the Menopause Research and Education Fund contacted me to see if I would like to run the London Marathon for them, I said ‘No, thank you’. But then I had a word with myself and decided to embrace the opportunity. I have done one marathon before – London 2014. I was premenopausal, ran alone and felt pretty invincible, albeit it was a tough challenge. 11 years later, I am wildly perimenopausal, need a friend to get through this and am far from invincible.”

We think she is invincible 💪✨ And we’re so proud to be supporting her every step of the way. 🍀 Good luck, Sarah!
