Mr Ioannis Christakis is a board-certified and Fellowship trained Endocrine and General Surgeon. He is registered in the Specialist Registry of GMC in General Surgery from 2012 (GMC number: 7031590). He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and of the European Board of Endocrine Surgery. He was appointed as a Consultant Endocrine and General Surgeon in Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in 2019 and is the Lead for the Thyroid Cancer MDT of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.​

He manages both benign and complex cancer cases and performs operations for the entire spectrum of Endocrine Surgery diseases including minimally invasive and oncologic operations. He has a special interest in parathyroid disorders and Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndromes.​

Mr Christakis performs an average of 100 parathyroidectomies, 100 thyroidectomies and 20 adrenalectomies per year. He has trained in Endocrine Surgery in MD Anderson Cancer Centre (Houston, USA), Oxford University Hospital NHS Trust, King’s College Hospital NHS Trust and University College London Hospital NHS Trust.​

He has completed a PhD degree in the Department of Endocrinology of Imperial College London and continues to be actively involved in basic science and clinical research. He has published numerous studies in peer-reviewed journals and is the author of several book chapters. The clinical outcomes of Mr Christakis are submitted to the National Audit Registry of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons. Mr Christakis uses state-of-the-art technology in his operations to provide excellent outcomes. Mr Christakis aims to deliver the care of the patients as close to home as possible, so even if you are out of area he will try optimise the timing of investigations, scans and follow-ups so that he minimises your travel needs to Nottingham. Mr Christakis operates private patients at The Park Hospital Circle Health Group in Nottingham.

Meet this week's consultant...🤩

Mr Ioannis Christakis is board certified in Endocrine and General Surgery: FRCS and FEBS(Endo), registered from 2012 in Specialist Registry of GMC in General Surgery.

Mr Christakis uses minimally invasive techniques for parathyroidectomies and adrenalectomies (laparoscopic). He consistently uses recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring and preoperative fibreoptic laryngoscopy for all thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy operations.

Mr Christakis has also published/been co-author in 45 peer-reviewed articles and presented 58 studies in Meetings/Courses. He has successfully secured grant funding and served as a coordinator for human clinical trials.
