Book review: Your Life in My Hands: A Junior Doctor’s Story

One of the team recently read Rachel Clarke’s powerful account of her transition from journalism to life as a junior doctor.

Although the book centres on the medical journey, it offers strong cross-sector relevance. Clarke’s reflections on kindness, callousness, wonder and candour resonate deeply with the principles that underpin effective case management. Some of these qualities serve as critical enablers within our own professional practice, while others reinforce behaviours that we work hard to ensure our clients never experience.

Congratulations to Linsey Jamieson, who has successfully achieved IRCM Registration. This is an important milestone and reflects her continued commitment to high-quality, accountable practice.

We asked Linsey how she felt about this achievement, and she said, ‘I am happy to be registered. It will be important for referrers and clients to know that case managers are meeting the IRCM standards.’

Well done from us all.👏

On Thursday, 4 December, a Westminster Hall Debate took place on the potential merits of a comprehensive action plan for acquired brain injury. MPs from across parties contributed, highlighting the real-world impact of brain injury on individuals, families and communities.

Key themes included the need for better access to community rehabilitation, closer integration of mental health and neurological care, improved support for children and families, clearer rehabilitation pathways and stronger data sharing across public services. Several MPs drew on powerful examples from their own constituencies to reinforce the case for a coordinated national approach.

The Minister confirmed that an action plan will be published in the next six months, setting out priorities across health, social care, education, justice and related sectors, with a commitment to embed rehabilitation and long-term support more effectively.

The full debate can be viewed in the video shared here for anyone who would like to understand the discussion in more depth. https://www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/a12d299d-cc5b-4b69-a3cd-57994ee034fa

Fantastic photos shared by Jo Sims, case manager, showcasing the Christmas decorations her client created for his rehabilitation team. Jay has been attending his local Men in Sheds group for a little while now, and he genuinely enjoys being part of it. He’s developing new skills as part of his rehabilitation journey and building new friendships along the way. It has become a real highlight within his busy rehab schedule.

Jay is a pleasure to work with. He remains fully engaged across all aspects of his rehabilitation and has delivered strong progress to date. As we approach 2026, we are jointly focused on maintaining this positive trajectory and supporting him in continuing to build on the solid foundations he has already established. 🎄

We had an unexpected but very welcome moment of festive cheer last week when Dr Phil Crowther from Rehabilitate Therapy arrived with a cake in hand. Spirits were high, contingency plans for immediate consumption were drafted, and then… the plot twist.

We discovered it was for Rehabilitate Therapy’s Christmas cake decoration competition.
The admin team did not hesitate. They got started with full seasonal commitment, operational agility and a healthy dose of competitive spirit. The result is a cake that genuinely looks ready for a prime spot in Santa’s own grotto. 🎅

It has been brilliant to see everyone rally together and create something so fun.

Thank you Rehabilitate Therapy Ltd for giving us the perfect excuse to step away from the inbox and embrace a bit of Christmas creativity. 🎄

Some of the team who support our client John recently met up for a Christmas dinner to mark the start of the festive season. It was a chance to come together, enjoy some time away from the day-to-day and celebrate the beginning of the Christmas period.

Rhiannon Imms, Claire Rhodes-Andrew, Catherine Watkins, Maria English and Claire Oldknow joined in what was a relaxed and enjoyable get-together.

We had a fabulous time at our team Christmas lunch this week. Bringing everyone together is always a high-value opportunity, particularly as we work across so many different regions and don't always have the chance to connect in person.

Great food, great company and now we're all in the mood for Christmas!

A few weeks ago, Mel, Kerstin and Jo attended the South Yorkshire Acquired Brain Injury Forum in Sheffield. Jo is a committee member and treasurer of the forum.

The theme for the day was navigating everyday life after brain injury, with three insightful talks covering:

• SCBIRT: who they are and what they do
• Bridging the gap by optimising communication and strategies in neurorehabilitation
• Navigating today’s welfare system reform

The speakers delivered strong, practical content and there was time for networking, allowing attendees to strengthen relationships and share learning.

Some of the AKA team are together today for a clinical supervision session, creating space for reflective dialogue and continued professional rigour. The discussion was anchored in three core themes at the heart of effective case management practice.

- Case manager responsibilities when there is awareness of client involvement in illegal activities, and how to navigate this with professionalism, clarity and safeguarding principles.

- Shared perspectives on the instinct to try and fix everything for clients, and how we balance empathy with the need to empower rather than take over.

- Annual training plans, ensuring our team maintains the highest standards of competency, compliance and forward-looking professional development.

Sessions like these reinforce the importance of shared learning, accountability and the collective commitment to best practice that has always shaped the way we work.
