Harmless

Harmless Harmless is the National Centre of Excellence for Self-Harm and Suicide Prevention. We know that with the right support and help, life can get better.

Harmless was founded by Caroline and Amy in October 2007, the duo, both with their own experiences used this and their passion to help others to turn the service from a dream into a reality. We are an all age, user led organisation, that provides a range of services about self harm including support, information, training and consultancy to people to self harm, their friends, families and professionals. We are people who understand self harm and at the heart of our service is a real sense of hope. We believe in hope and recovery. What support do we offer? We offer two streams of support for people that do or are at risk of self harm. These services are equal in terms of quality and skill of the workforce, but differ in terms of approach and the length of time that people can access them. Clinical Support Work draws upon the expertise of a specialist self harm organisation and works to provide a stabilisation intervention to those who self harm. We also have a team of qualified therapists that deliver a range of therapy opportunities to our service users. Trained across different therapy approaches we can provide short term, long term, and sometimes group psychotherapy

We can deliver support through multiple methods including: face to face, phone, online video support, email and post. We have a number of Clinical Support Workers and Therapists based in Nottinghamshire, Bassetlaw, Leicestershire and Rutland delivering one-one weekly emotional and practical support. Training and Information? Harmless has a specialist in-house training department called Let’s Talk Training. Our Specialist Training Team deliver a range of courses round the issues of self harm, suicide prevention, awareness and bereavement and mental health. We also produce a number of leaflets and resources about self harm aimed at improving awareness of self harm, challenging stigma and helping people move towards a better quality of life. Ahead of World Bipolar Day on Monday, our colleague Anna challenges some myths for this week's blog. Bipolar isn’t just 'mood swings' – it’s complex, misunderstood and often stigmatised. Learn more, listen better and rethink what you think you know.

By Anna Scott (Clinical Support Worker) It takes an average of 9.5 years to get a correct diagnosis of bipolar disorder in the UK. The overwhelming misunderstanding of what the condition involves can be a major hindrance for diagnosis. Despite being present in roughly 1 in 100 of us, many of us have...

Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating. While Eid al-Fitr brings joy, it can also stir grief and absence for some. This week's blog offers support, reflection and compassion for those navigating loss during Ramadhaan and Eid.

By Ammarah Peerbhai (Clinical Support Worker) and Jess Paine (Fundraising & Events Officer) ‘In Islam, hardship and loss are acknowledged as inevitable parts of the human condition. While your faith can offer immense strength, meaning and comfort, it does not magically erase the pain of grief’ (...

From Harm to Hope... Our colleagues Helen and Božana reflect on a powerful celebration of connection, compassion and life-saving work at our recent conference – proving that together, we can save lives.

By Helen Birch (Conference Chair / Training & Education Officer) & Božana Lončarević (Training & Education Officer) The 11th From Harm to Hope Conference is now behind us, and what an incredible success it was! If someone had wandered into the venue by accident, they might have been met with a su...

Motherhood isn’t only milestones. Some moments sit in the quiet in-between – unseen, unspoken, yet deeply felt. Following Mother’s Day, our CEO Caroline reflects on loss, identity, and the spaces we carry but rarely name.

By Caroline Harroe (CEO) Motherhood, for me, isn’t a tidy row of flowers or a perfectly set table. It is a sprawling, vibrant, and sometimes breath-stealing tapestry. It’s woven with the chaotic laughter of my five children – each with their own beautiful, quirky rhythm – and held together b...

In this week's blog, our colleague Maanika reflects on stepping into outreach and the power of listening. Meaningful conversations start when we slow down, stay curious and truly hear people’s experiences 👇

Outreach work in the communities we serve is at the heart of what Harmless and The Tomorrow Project stand for. Our colleague Maanika Aggarwal shares some reflections on a recent event she attended in Mansfield. I find myself asking the same question again and again: what truly is my role in the worl...

On our colleague Anna shares her journey from social smoker to smoke-free for six years. Quitting means better health, new habits and freedom from addiction. If you’re trying to quit, keep going – every smoke-free moment counts!

By Anna Senkowska-Gracka (Clinical Administrative Officer) I have never been a heavy smoker – I used to joke that ci******es were my ‘bad five-a-day’, and have never seen myself as an addict (despite clearly being one). I started smoking in my late teens and carried on, with breaks of various ...
