Just One Thing - something new.
Yesterday I used the NetGo app on my phone for the first time to buy a tram ticket to take the tram to the Nottingham Hockey Centre opposite the University of Nottingham.
Now it would have been easy enough to have just driven over there. But I felt like challenging myself to use the app without more technologically advanced members of my family showing me how to do it. And I wanted to learn which tram to take to that side of the city and from where. This all sounds really simple doesn't it but we can easily find ourselves doing the same thing, going to the same places in the same way and using other people to sort out things that initially feel a bit challening and so I felt like going it alone and pushing my comfort zone just a little bit wider.
And so I did it and....
I now know how to use the app (really easy).
I now know how to go to the station, the Queens Medical Centre, the hockey centre and the university by tram (really easy and super interesting to see that side of the city unfold from the windows of the tram).
I had a lovely time watching my daughter play hockey at the amazing hockey venue and also wandered round Highfields Park by the university - really beautiful.
What a wonderful afternoon and all started by doing one tiny new thing on my own - the purchase of a tramticket on my phone! Confidence boosting and liberating.....

The Joy of Running - your breathing regulating; your body getting into a rhythm; feeling at one with your surroundings. Gaining perspective and clarity; seeing solutions; ideas tumbling out of your head. The Joy of Running in Autumn - the crunch of leaves under your feet; the crackle of twigs; the honk of Canada Geese flying overhead; the chatter of birds in the trees; the majesty of swans on the lagoons and river; the realisation of the year slipping seamlessly from summer, through autumn into winter; the fields changing as crops have been harvested; the change in the air, oh that lovely fresh air.......The Joy of Running - that wonderful endorphin high feeling you get at the end. Moving medicine.....................

So another of Dr Michael Mosely's Just One Thing suggestions is exercising less, more often; AKA 'movement snacking'. And that's what I've been up to today. A dip in Colwick Lake this morning; cycled to and from an appointment with a client at lunchtime; and just hurtled round the local streets with Tinker dog. Plus charging up and down stairs in between meetings to get stuff from the printer, refills of drinks etc. Movement snacking - more of it...........

Country Running

It’s great to get out surely you see,
To run like the wind so fast and so free.
To blaze a long trail wherever you go,
It just doesn’t matter if you’re fast or you’re slow. A cross country run or a jog in the street,
A couple of miles on fast moving feet
Your arms are pumping, your blood’s in a rush But it’s so much better than taking a bus.
Out with some friends and having some fun
It really is great when you’re out for a run.
No matter the weather, sun, snow or rain
You’ll only get better if you continue to train.
So run with your body, your heart and your mind It’s pleasure and fun, I’m sure you will find. Sometimes it’s hard. “That’s enough!” you will say, At the end of a session, a really tough day.
The next will be better, just wait and see
And again you’ll be running alive and so free.
So never give up wherever you are
The finishing line is not really far.
