Yesterday was World Sleep Day 🛌🏼

We all know how important sleep is for our health and wellbeing but this is even more so the case when you live with Epilepsy.

Find out more about the importance of sleep and the effect it has on seizures with these helpful links from The Epilepsy Society.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18Vi6jzSxq/

Did you know there’s a strong connection between epilepsy and sleep?

For some people, missing out on sleep can trigger seizures, while others may only have seizures during sleep or as they’re waking up. In certain types of epilepsy, seizures are more likely to occur in the first few hours after getting up.

Sleep disruption can also increase seizure likelihood, creating a cycle where epilepsy affects sleep, and poor sleep raises seizure risk. Anti-seizure medications (ASMs) can influence this too; some may cause drowsiness, while others can lead to difficulty sleeping or lighter sleep. On the positive side, some ASMs actually support better rest by boosting deep sleep.

This , let’s shine a light on how sleep and epilepsy interact. Understanding these links can make a real difference in improving sleep quality and supporting better seizure control for those living with epilepsy.

👩🏾‍🔬 Healthcare Science Week!👨🏽‍🔬

This year's theme is 'The Scientists behind the Health Service'.

Last week a couple of our staff members were rewarded for their commitment to the NHS and specifically here in Neurophysiology @ QMC by attending NUH's Long Service Awards.

Chief Exec Anthony May awarded Consultant Clinical Scientist Helen her 35 year certificate and Specialist Neurophysiological Scientist Andrea her 25 years! What a fantastic achievement 👏

Special mention to Julie, former office manager who was also awarded for 35 years of service, a good deal of which was spent with us.

Congratulations ladies!

Please only attend ED in a life-threatening accident or emergency, thank you.

➡️ UPDATE - as of Wednesday 5 November 2025 at 6pm, we are still in Critical Incident, however we are in a much better position.

Operational performance has improved, with fewer ambulance waits and long waits in A&E.

Our Electronic Patient Record position is much improved, with more of the system up and running, and less reliance on business continuity plans.

During this Critical Incident, we have not cancelled any operations.

We will remain in Critical Incident overnight and will review again in the morning (Thursday 6 November).

Please continue to follow the advice on our website. We thank all of our staff who continue to work tirelessly during these extreme pressures.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have declared a Critical Incident due to sustained pressures across the Trust, in particular our Emergency Department.

Please only use our Emergency Department in a life-threatening accident or emergency, using other services such as GPs, NHS111 and pharmacies in all other cases. Those with planned appointments should continue to attend unless told otherwise.
