A heartbreaking incident in East Sussex has prompted renewed focus on load safety across the construction sector. Last month, new government guidance was introduced following the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy who was struck by unsecured scaffolding that fell from a vehicle. The boy, who was a passenger in a car, later died in hospital due to his injuries. A stark reminder of the catastrophic consequences when materials are not properly secured during transport.

The updated guidance, overseen by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), places stronger emphasis on conducting thorough risk assessments, securing loads effectively and ensuring materials – including scaffolding components are covered and restrained correctly. The DVSA has highlighted that improper load security doesn’t just endanger drivers; it poses profound risks to all road users.
