Let’s talk recovery...
Athletes often under estimate the importance of recovery. How many times after a hard session or a competition have you gone for a quick recovery walk plodding along at a snail’s pace that quite simply does nothing to reduce your lactate levels. An effective recovery starts from the moment you finish your exercise whether that be low, medium or high intensity training. Now obviously the higher the intensity the longer it takes us to recover fully, but let’s not be fooled here because yes recovery is about what we have just done but its also about preparing our bodies for the next training session so getting a good recovery is important across all training bands.
Tips from my experience as an international athlete
o It takes longer than you think…
• We don’t all have teams of physiologists to monitor our recovery but for most people around 15-30 minutes after high intensity/competition will bring your blood lactate level back into range.
• don’t just go through the motions, your muscles have to be working to flush out the lactate.
• Especially in the winter be sure to have warm clothes to put on while you might be hot immediately after your body temperature soon drops when its cold out
o Prepare…
• Ideally, we should eat immediately after exercise so having it to hand as soon as you have finished takes the thought process out of it when you are fatigued.
• On competition days, have a recovery bag with your recovery food and cool down kit in and use cable ties to ensure its not tampered with. Make sure your able to get into it after your event though.
Now I’m no physiologist its just my personal experience and what worked for me so if you need more help from a physiology side please get advice from a specialist in that area. What I can tell you though is how sports hypnosis can help you accelerate your recovery. Can it replace all that I’ve just told you about, NO. Getting results in sport comes from getting lots of things right and multiple disciplines working together to create a rounded and well-balanced athlete.
So how will it help? Relax and Recover for sport sessions are guided meditations that allow you to go into a deep state of relaxation. They are specifically designed to bring attention to your body, giving you a greater understanding of what’s going on, picking up on niggles early and preventing possible injuries. It reduces muscular fatigue and boosts energy, you will feel better recovered and ready for your next training session.
I currently run sessions on Friday’s at 7pm and Saturdays at 1pm and if you or your sports team want to arrange a group session you can do so by emailing me; laura@hypnogoals.co.uk for availability
