Meet Leanne, October's Graduate of the Month!
What is your background?
I started dancing ballet when I was 3. In my early twenties, I sustained a knee injury & underwent weekly physiotherapy & injury massage. Due to the severity of the injury, I was advised that I would no longer be able to continue dancing at that level, despite making significant improvements.
After moving countries and settling in the UK, I had two children, and began working as a teaching assistant, a role which I held for 8 years. Although I enjoyed the work, I never felt completely fulfilled & eventually decided to revisit my earlier interest for massage therapy, inspired by the positive results I had experienced years before.
During my research, I discovered the Sports Massage Academy & after a conversation with Alex, felt confident that this was right for me. I completed my Level 3 Diploma and a few months later, progressed to the Level 4 Certificate which I completed just before the summer. Since then, I have undertaken additional CPD courses in Cupping & Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM).
How have you used your qualification?
After completing my Level 3 I launched my own business, Shoreline Sports Massage, in Christchurch, Bournemouth in March 2025. It has been a steep learning curve, as this was a completely new venture for me, but an incredibly rewarding one. The SMA webinars have been an excellent resource, offering valuable guidance of setting up a business & I would highly recommend them to anyone starting out.
I am currently renting a treatment room within a chiropractic clinic & offering home visits in the evenings to support my growing client base. My long-term goal is to establish my own dedicated space in the future & to build a website to support that. I am also about to complete a CPD course in Kinesiology Taping in November.
What did you think of the course you attended?
When I began researching courses, I discovered many options available, including a range of cheaper online courses. However, after learning more about the SMA & speaking with Alex, I was convinced by their strong emphasis on practical & hands-on learning, something I believe is essential for this profession.
The tutors were exceptional. They delivered the training to a consistently high standard, combining extensive knowledge with genuine support & encouragement. Their approachable & professional manner made the learning experience both engaging & enjoyable for me.
My overall experience with the SMA has been outstanding, & Iβve truly valued every moment of the journey. I would wholeheartedly recommend training with them, the alumni network is also an excellent source of continued guidance, connection, & professional growth once qualified.
What is your top tip?
There is rarely a perfect time to make a change, but if you can relate to my personal journey, donβt be afraid to take that step. Growth often starts outside your comfort zone. Always be open to learning & developing your new skills. Itβs easy to compare yourself to others who may be years ahead of you in this industry but remember, thereβs only one you! So be confident in yourself and work hard as you grow and build your unique business.
