Meet Craig, December's Graduate of the Month!

What is your background?

"My background prior to sports massage was recruitment & employability as well as a qualified PT. I have always been active since i was 14 years old, through athletics, martial arts, rugby and finally into bodybuilding. I sustained an injury in 2018 where I ruptured my bicep needing surgical reattachment, which really knocked me physically & mentally. This is what initially lead me wanting to pursue sports massage, extending my knowledge into anatomy, movement patterns & learning more about understanding injuries and how to fix them."

How have you used your new qualification?

"Since qualifying in 2019 I have built my client base steadily on a part-time basis. Only the last year have I really been pushing my business to a point where I am now busy enough to go full time self-employed. My business has 2 strands with sports massage & online fitness coaching. Staying patient & working long hours have certainly paid off. I am based in a martial arts gym in South Wales which has enabled me to work with all walks of life including UFC fighter Mason Jones, a mixture of professional, semi professional & amateur athletes as well as every day people struggling with general aches and pains. The knowledge gained through qualifying as a massage therapist has really helped further my knowledge with anatomy which I apply to all my clients - identifying imbalances on form review/training videos, in person as well as check-in photos. This knowledge helps me to support my clients further by getting on top of tension/dysfunctions early before they lead to injury."

What did you think of the course you attended?

"10/10 service from the Sports Massage Academy - Luke Ursell was my tutor, very intelligent & insightful throughout the training. He helped me to understand the bigger picture with making a difference through sports massage. Not just to perform deep tissue treatments, but the potential knock on affect one tight area can have to another."

What would you say to anyone looking to train in Sports Massage Therapy?

"Always set time aside to learn more, train & develop - every day's a school day."

Meet Matt, November's Graduate of the Month who has recently taken his qualification over to Australia!

What is your background?

"I've been a self-employed personal trainer for over 11 years now and that is where I started my fitness career. Running my own business has been a passion of mine and being able to help people improve their health is such a rewarding feeling.
I've always being into competitive sport and have played football growing up, then for the last few years I've really focussed on running."

How have you used your qualification?

"During that time I decided to enrol onto the Sports Massage Academy Level 3 course. This was to give me another 'string to the bow' in my business. It also allowed me to help my clients recover a lot more effectively being able to offer them a sports massage. I then did the Cupping Therapy course to compliment my sports massage service. I've recently taken my business over to Australia to start the next exciting chapter in my career!"

What did you think of the course you attended?

"The course was well ran and professional, Luke was incredibly knowledgeable and we had a good laugh at the same time. I think that's massively important because it can be quite intense trying to learn so much information. It's a great balance."

What is your top tip?

"Be confident about what you deliver and never stop learning. Always look to improve and that will reflect in your business growth. Enjoy the process too!"

Meet Leanne, October's Graduate of the Month!

What is your background?

I started dancing ballet when I was 3. In my early twenties, I sustained a knee injury & underwent weekly physiotherapy & injury massage. Due to the severity of the injury, I was advised that I would no longer be able to continue dancing at that level, despite making significant improvements.
After moving countries and settling in the UK, I had two children, and began working as a teaching assistant, a role which I held for 8 years. Although I enjoyed the work, I never felt completely fulfilled & eventually decided to revisit my earlier interest for massage therapy, inspired by the positive results I had experienced years before.
During my research, I discovered the Sports Massage Academy & after a conversation with Alex, felt confident that this was right for me. I completed my Level 3 Diploma and a few months later, progressed to the Level 4 Certificate which I completed just before the summer. Since then, I have undertaken additional CPD courses in Cupping & Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM).

How have you used your qualification?

After completing my Level 3 I launched my own business, Shoreline Sports Massage, in Christchurch, Bournemouth in March 2025. It has been a steep learning curve, as this was a completely new venture for me, but an incredibly rewarding one. The SMA webinars have been an excellent resource, offering valuable guidance of setting up a business & I would highly recommend them to anyone starting out.
I am currently renting a treatment room within a chiropractic clinic & offering home visits in the evenings to support my growing client base. My long-term goal is to establish my own dedicated space in the future & to build a website to support that. I am also about to complete a CPD course in Kinesiology Taping in November.

What did you think of the course you attended?

When I began researching courses, I discovered many options available, including a range of cheaper online courses. However, after learning more about the SMA & speaking with Alex, I was convinced by their strong emphasis on practical & hands-on learning, something I believe is essential for this profession.
The tutors were exceptional. They delivered the training to a consistently high standard, combining extensive knowledge with genuine support & encouragement. Their approachable & professional manner made the learning experience both engaging & enjoyable for me.
My overall experience with the SMA has been outstanding, & I’ve truly valued every moment of the journey. I would wholeheartedly recommend training with them, the alumni network is also an excellent source of continued guidance, connection, & professional growth once qualified.

What is your top tip?

There is rarely a perfect time to make a change, but if you can relate to my personal journey, don’t be afraid to take that step. Growth often starts outside your comfort zone. Always be open to learning & developing your new skills. It’s easy to compare yourself to others who may be years ahead of you in this industry but remember, there’s only one you! So be confident in yourself and work hard as you grow and build your unique business.

Meet Charlie, August's Graduate of the Month!

What is your background?

"My background before starting the sports massage journey was joining the Police. When i looked into joining, a degree was required. I spent 5 years to get a public service, a blue light service and a policing and intelligence degree. They changed this on my last year at university, but I decided to join West Midlands Police at Tally Ho training ground. After contemplating on whether this was for me for years, I decided to give it a go anyway but quickly realised it wasn't. The journey was great but after making this hard decision and talking to multiple sports therapists, I decided it was time to move onto this next journey. Best decision I have made!"

How have you used your new qualification?

"Since graduating, I have started my own sports massage business in Great Barr (mobile) called Compression Sports Massage. I plan on progressing my sports massage business and training, with a few CPD courses already booked. I am slowly building my confidence and am learning more and more each day, with my business and clients growing steadily."

What did you think of the course you attended?

"Sports Massage Academy is amazing. I was initially recommended by somebody else, and am now happy to recommend them myself to anybody looking to go into the field, you could not ask for a better and more professional training provider! I already have a CPD course booked soon and plan on booking more when further become available, 10/10!"

What would you say to anyone looking to train in Sports Massage Therapy?

"My number 1 tip for anybody thinking about joining the industry is take that leap and do it! It is hard work and takes time to learn and get better, especially at the beginning, but it is 100% worth it!"

Meet Mark, July's Graduate of the Month!

What is your background?

"At the age of 18, I sustained an injury while playing football, which resulted in a long-term back problem. I was advised to strengthen my muscles to support my back, leading me to discover bodybuilding. Through my training, I developed a passion for working in the fitness industry. Over the years, I have worked as a fitness instructor, personal trainer, and personal training manager.
Understanding how injuries and pain can affect everyday life, I wanted to advance my career to help others overcome and manage their own pain."

How have you used your new qualification?

"After graduating from Level 3 in March, I immediately enrolled on to Level 4 and graduated in June. Additionally, I completed CPD courses in Kinesiology Taping and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). I have since established Musculus Sports Massage, which has enabled me to achieve my goals of assisting others in managing pain and recovering from their injuries."

What did you think of the course you attended?

"The Sports Massage Academy has been excellent from the beginning. All the materials and information required to graduate are provided to a high standard. Additionally, comprehensive support and guidance are offered through the complementary Alumni Membership to help set up your own business.
Throughout my journey from Level 3 to Level 4 and both CPD courses, I was mentored by Luke Ursell. His extensive knowledge and effective teaching methods made the learning process engaging and enjoyable."

What would you say to anyone looking to train in Sports Massage Therapy?

"Follow your Dream! Study hard and practice as much as possible. Allow the Sports Massage Academy to guide you through the process."
