Prescribed a medication to REDUCE/LOWER the production of stomach acid? YET....

The issue is commonly, not too much stomach acid, but not strong enough acidity and therefore ends up in the wrong post code.

Also reducing stomach acid, reduces the disinfecting powers of the stomach, after all we need those microscopic bugs to be 'singed' by the STRONG acid. If not, they can go onto reap havoc further down the gut...which can result in chronic health issues such as bowel cancer.

IF THIS IS THE CASE, THEN WHY DOES NOT EVERYONE WHO IS ON THESE ANTACIDS KNOW THIS? ๐Ÿง

So what happens next? You don't have enough stomach acid, so the LOWER OESOPHAGEAL SPHINCTER does not get the CLEAR acidic message that you can now 'shut shop', so it remains open, and out shoots the acid (and pepsin) from the stomach. OUCH OUCH! ๐Ÿคจ

The stomach has a thick mucosal lining, which protects it from the acidity (isn't biology just amazing?) and from the pepsinogen (which is a protein-digesting enzyme)...but sadly the oesophagus lining does not have this protection, so there is pain, burning, inflammation and if this continues, ulcers etc. โš ๏ธ

Furthermore, the stomach acid reduces even further...yet acid reflux in MAJORITY of cases is not due to, excess acidity.

So, as the acid-blocking medications are continued, they increase the risk of H.Pylori. These critters are around all the time, but they only come out to party when the 'big bro' has left (i.e stomach acid is low). Sadly, H.Pylori can lead to stomach cancer if left unchecked. ๐Ÿ‘€

(there is a blog on H.Pylori too)

But on a more nutritional note, once you reduce stomach acid with these meds, you impact everything else downstream, including nutrient depletion.

I see too many kids on Omeprazole, kids should not be prescribed Omeprazole IMHO, then they end up having growth issues, nutritional deficiencies, poor gut health....on and on it goes.

Also acid reflux can be linked to poor bile health, constipation, poor gut motility, overeating (you know when you feel so full, you can't even breathe), not enough serotonin, not leaving enough time in between meals as this upsets the Migrating Motor Complex...and so on

Know anyone with acid reflux? And know any parents whose child is on Omeprazole? This blog is for them...๐Ÿ™
