Founded 1948 as the Family Welfare Committee of Nottingham Council for Voluntary Service (NCVS) Nottingham Counselling Service (NCS) became an independent charity in 1977 when the range of it services expanded. The charitable aims of NCS are:
(a) To promote charitable purposes for the benefit of the population primarily within the counties of Nottinghamshire and East Midlands and in particular but not exclusively the furtherance of health and the relief of distress and sickness associated with emotional, personal, marital, family or related problems. (b) In support of the above purposes, to provide a confidential counselling service, education, training, and support for counselling and to develop counselling resources. At Nottingham Counselling Service we believe that everyone should enjoy good mental health and well-being. This should not be restricted by circumstance or background. Our Mission is to be an exemplar counselling centre providing quality sustainable psychological counselling services that are meaningful for individuals and have a positive impact on the local community, economy and wider society. The services provided are available to all adults aged 16 and above that experience mental health problems in Nottinghamshire and East Midlands. We are increasing access counselling to support for individual dealing with issues such as: low self-esteem, relationship, stress, anxiety, depression, bereavement, sexual abuse, traumas, etc. Service users and their families will experience improvements in their mental health and wellbeing. Our Story

Since 1997, Nottingham Counselling Service has been working hard to ensure that people in need of counselling can access high quality support to prevent or address more severe mental health issues.

We provide a safe and friendly community space in which local people with mental health challenges can have somebody to talk to, to help them reflect on the issues that affect them.

But our job is getting more difficult.

An estimated 50% of adults aged 55+ have experienced common mental health problems in their life and approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. It appears that how people cope with mental health problems is getting worse as the number of people who self-harm or have suicidal thoughts is increasing. And all this is against a backdrop of reduced government funding for NHS trusts to provide mental health services of some £600 million over the course of the last parliament (from 2010/11 to 2014/15).
