Grief is a confusing thing and is a different experience for each individual. When a bereavement is related to substance use, it can feel even more complicated.

Nottingham Grief Support is a place where people can go to speak openly to those who understand.💙

They make no judgement toward substance use or the complicated thoughts and feelings that arise when grieving for somebody who has died in relation to drugs or alcohol.

Last up in our Black History Month spotlight: Dr. Carl Bell — visionary psychiatrist, FASD advocate, and champion for Black communities. 🏆

Dr. Bell’s groundbreaking research revealed the impact of fetal alcohol exposure on psychiatric and behavioral health, particularly in low-income and Black communities. His work challenged systemic inequalities and fought against misdiagnoses that too often affected Black people.

Healthcare and recovery should be accessible to everyone. We’re grateful to pioneers like Dr. Carl Bell, whose dedication helped pave the way for fairer, more equitable support for all.

Huge shoutout to The Health Shop for joining us at NRN for an amazing sexual health training session! 🙌

Sexual health matters — just like mental and physical health. The more we talk about it, the easier it gets to break the stigma and support one another. 💚

Next up in our Black History Month series is one you should all know - Samuel L. Jackson!

Jackson has been candid about his own struggles with drugs and alcohol throughout his career, opening important conversations about recovery and especially its impact on family and loved ones.

He even says that his experiences have shaped him as an actor, learning that "creating whole people means knowing where we come from, how we can make a mistake and how we overcome things to make ourselves stronger."

A powerful testament to the unexpected rewards recovery can bring! ✨

A recent study found that 1 in 4 people in the UK worry about a loved one’s drinking — and 1 in 6 about their drug use. With over 310,000 people receiving NHS treatment for drug and alcohol problems each year, these worries are real.

At NRN, we know substance use affects everyone around it - not just one person. If you’re supporting someone through recovery or just need people who get it, our Family & Carers service is here for you.

We can give expert guidance, community, and practical tools to help you cope 💙

As part of our series celebrating Black pioneers in recovery, we are honouring Chaney Allen: her courage, legacy, and impact that continues to echo today.

Author of I’m Black and I’m Sober, Allen was one of the first Black women to write a memoir documenting the experience of alcoholism and sobriety. Through her honest storytelling, Allen broke ground by centering the experiences of Black women in recovery — voices too often erased from both history and the recovery movement. 📖

Her work reminds us that healing and liberation are deeply connected, and that recovery spaces must hold space for every story. 💜
