NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, Hearing theme Our vision is to create new knowledge to alleviate the burden of disability arising from hearing-related problems.

The National Institute for Health Research Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (NIHR Nottingham BRC) offers some of the best facilities in the UK for supporting research in the hearing sciences. In particular, our commitment is to pursue research through multi-disciplinary collaboration that can be translated into practical benefits to improve the quality of patients’ lives. To do this, we bring together well-established, internationally recognised experts and some of the brightest talent in our discipline. Our vision is to improve the quality of life for people with hearing-related problems through our research. In 2008, NIHR established a Biomedical Research Unit in Hearing in Nottingham with a grant of £3.75 million over four years. In 2012, NIHR awarded £6.25 million to further support our broad portfolio of research for another five-year period. In 2017, NIHR awarded a further £23.6M to establish the NIHR Nottingham BRC. NIHR Nottingham BRC is a partnership between the University of Nottingham and the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. It also has close links with Audiology and Ear/Nose/Throat services and with national charities supporting people with hearing-related problems and tinnitus.

In June, Members of the Tinnitus UK team visited the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), long-time collaborators and the most prolific hub for tinnitus research in the world.

The BRC is a leading force in the quest to better understand, manage, and ultimately cure tinnitus.

Founded in 2009, the Nottingham BRC is part of a wider network of biomedical centres in the UK and is dedicated to translating scientific discoveries into real-world treatments.

During our visit, we were given a powerful insight into the sheer breadth and ambition of their work on hearing conditions – particularly tinnitus.
