Hello we need your HELP and signatures to PREVENT a serious accident on this dangerous stretch of road in Devon
These Videos show that no speed signs are in place, therefore it’s a 30 mph limit based on Highway laws.
* From Bridestowe; https://youtu.be/HoZYCy1CKQw
* Towards Bridestowe; https://youtu.be/jTNurVROvzs
-Google maps shows the road as a 30 mph
-SATNAV's shows the road as 30 mph
-Google maps image shows a National Speed limit sign in 2014 on the Towards Bridestowe road and nothing from Bridestowe, so always a mixed message
-Street lights are spaced to make this a 30 mph road ( unless a sign says otherwise and currently there are no signs - so legally 30 mph )
And yet all vehicles speed through and we've had many near misses!
I hope message finds you well, we need your support and signature for the council meeting on 28th September 2022 ; we are at 113 and need more support, please
We live on old A30, Bridestowe, Okehampton Devon EX20 4NS. The road from Bridestowe slip road, past Little Bidlake, and around the next bend needs 30 mph signs put up to enforce the legal speed limit { or decrease it to 30 mph for road safety }
In the middle of that section of road are a campsite, a crossroads with a blind corner, a number of residential houses, that can't use their front doors in fear of speeding vehicles, and a farm where many horses have to hack out from.
It’s the only route to hacking and bridle paths, for the horses & ponies, at Little Bidlake farm and it's a fast road because it has no speed limit signs to show its 30 mph, to motorists fly through, and very few slow to the required 10 mph when passing, and lorries often start braking hard when they see a walker, cyclist, horse, slower car and then realise its too late and whizz past with brakes hissing. The other day the recycling lorry stalled and ended up in limp mode as it had to brake too hard to miss a lady on horseback!
On numerous satellite navigation systems, it shows as a 30 mph section, as does Google maps, and it has street lamps* the whole length of the road, by law this makes it a 30 mph road
And before the street lamps from either direction there is no speed limit noted to override the Highway law, so by law, it’s a 30 mph* road, motorists simply don’t know so speed through at 60 mph ( and more )
The locals that have lived here longer than us say it was 30 mph and some road works occurred and a change of street lights to LED bulbs occurred and they did not put the speed signs back up
The road is dangerous as at 60 mph drivers come around a blind corner and find caravans, tractors, dog walkers, cars, and all manner of road users and horses, from a yard with 30 horses, hacking out
We’ve had many near misses, on our bikes, in our car, and on horseback, as cars and large lorries whizz past, very few following the new highway laws of giving a wide birth to cyclists and horse riders and the max speed of 10 mph
How do we get the 30 mph signs reinstated, to ensure road safety??
As by law, it is a 30 mph road based on current signage and street lighting.
“* National speed limits
A speed limit of 30 miles per hour (48km/h) applies to all single and dual carriageways with street lights, unless there are signs showing otherwise.”
There are no signs saying otherwise.
New driving rules for passing horses on the road
You may cross a double white line (providing the road is clear) when overtaking someone cycling or riding a horse if they are traveling at 10mph or less (rule 129).When passing horses on the road or horse-drawn vehicles at speeds below 10mph, there must be at least 2 meters of space. This distance has increased from 1.5 meters to 2 meters.If it is unsafe, you must wait behind and not overtake.When slowing down to pass riders, drivers must slow down to 10mph. Previously it was 15mph.
Currently coming around the corner from either direction at 60 mph it’s very hard to safely slow and overtake.
At the crossroads and road between the two corners, if two vehicles approach one from either direction it is not possible to give the room required to pass safely for cyclists, walkers, or horse riders and an accident is waiting to happen
Action needed to please to put up 30 mph signs at either end of street lights section of old A30 as per other villages on road { whether that's to enforce a speed of 30 mph based on current road setup or to amend any previous decisions to make this national speed limit }
Please sign so we can share it with the parish council this September 2022 - show your support today please
