Two NHS Tayside specialists challenged themselves to a pureed diet to gain invaluable insights into the difficulties faced by patients with head and neck cancers.

Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, Sinéad McCarney, and Specialist Oncology Dietitian, Rachel Stewart, who are based at Ninewells, embarked on the week-long trial.

The work gave an insight into eating, drinking and swallowing issues, and will include patient reflections, the development of resources and service improvement while supporting multidisciplinary collaboration between dietitians, speech and language therapists and medical teams.

What led you to work in dietetics?
Im not sure I could say it was one event or factor that lead me to become a dietitian. I originally went to study chemical engineering at university and so feel I took the scenic route into dietetics. I first became aware of dietetics as a friend in school chose to study this at university straight after secondary school. | studied dietetics at Robert Gordon's university as the combination of science, nutrition, team work and its impact on public health really interested me.

What do you find most rewarding & enjoy? - Working with in an amazing team & seeing the impact that support and advice can make to individuals.

Most challenging? - I would say the same as many others. Time, there are never enough hours in the day.

What is one piece of information that you would like people to know?

Eating foods containing vitamin C can help your body absorb the iron. Foods which contain phytates (bran-containing cereals) or tannins (tea and coffee) make it difficult for your body to absorb iron.

If you would like a resource which easily and clearly lays out what different minerals and vitamins do, food sources and how much you need have a look at this NHS page below:

📝What lead you to work in dietetics?
I think I always had an interest in diet health and was really interested in the health psychology, although my original degree was in biology. A friend from school was studying dietetics at the same time and I always thought it sounded really interesting. Apparently I told a friend at school that all I thought she was eating too many brightly coloured sweets and it might be affecting her behaviour- I have no recollection of saying that, but sorry to that friend! I worked in London for many years in different hospitals, before moving to various community posts in Scotland, along with a bit of lecturing at Queen Margaret's University. I consider myself lucky to have worked in lots of different places and loved every job. I feel 'm veering into a retirement speech here!

📝What do you find most rewarding/ enjoy most
The staff! We have a great team of very enthusiastic and skilled staff across the City and Shires which makes my job easy. It's definitely the best thing about the job. I don't have as much contact with patients as I would like, but I love looking at new ideas and service developments to improve things for patients.

📝Most challenging
Time! There is never enough time to do all the things I want to do.

📝What is one fact/ piece of information that you would like people to know?
I am a rubbish cook and can't follow a recipe!

⭐On the 10th day of dietetics...
We would like to introduce Michelle our wonderful community frailty dietitian💙

📝What led you to work in dietetics?
Before studying Dietetics, I worked as a dispensing technician in a pharmacy and here I was introduced to patients, who required modified diets to treat their medical condition. For example, individuals with coeliac disease and PKU. I found it very interesting that you could treat medical conditions via food modification . I also enjoyed working with individuals in the community and always wanted to be in a profession where I could help individuals so Dietetics seemed like the perfect fit.

📝What do you find most rewarding/ enjoy most
I find it most rewarding being able to help individuals reach their goals and to see how much joy this can bring to a patient. I also really enjoy working with the older adult population and helping them to maintain their muscle mass to help with their mobility, reduce falls and help to keep some of their independence where possible. They also tend to have many good stories/words of wisdom to share with you which I always enjoy listening too !

📝What is one piece of information that you would like people to know?
Sarcopenia, is often associated with frailty therefore, dietetic input is vital in this patient group. Maintaining strong muscles and bones via diet and light exercise where possible, helps to prevent/minimise muscle mass loss which can decrease risk of falls and fractures.

⭐On the 9th day of Dietetics...
we have our amazing Paediatric Dietitian Katy!⭐

📝What led you to work in dietetics?
I always enjoyed biology and nutrition at school and so when I came across the Dietetic course it felt like a great option for me! I started my career in Dietetics as a Paediatric Dietitian down in Tayside before moving back up to Aberdeen as part of the Adult Community Dietetic team. I always wanted to work with children and so a few years later was thrilled to get a post which allowed me back into the world of Paeds.

📝What do you find most rewarding
The most rewarding part of my role is defiantly when we see the advice we give to children and young people making a difference to their everyday lives!

📝Most challenging is not having enough Dietitians to support all the families who would benefit from the service
