I am a Clinical massage and Myofascial body worker specialising in chronic pain. Sometimes you don’t get to chose the way you give birth.

As much as you may have a plan of sorts sometimes events happen and you head down a route you may not have been prepared to take.

Having a C Section is just another way of giving birth and I strongly feel we need to realise this.

So many mums seem to feel guilt over not giving birth vaginally, or having the birth they wanted, but sometimes this decision is out of our hands.

If you chose to give birth this way, this is your choice and please don’t feel you should feel anything but pride in choosing the birth for YOU and your baby.

However you gave birth, and whatever the circumstances, your labour will be honoured and I am more than happy to allow my space to be a place where you can process this ❣️

S C A R S and their ripple effect.......

I was trying to explain to a client how a scar can have effects which ripple across the body and those effects can be felt above, below and to the sides of that scar.

Then take into account that majority of scars aren’t just surface layer scars but actually go into the deeper layers of soft tissue (7 layers with a C Section) too we can then start to see why the effects can be sometimes quite extreme!

That surface scar may look beautiful but your ni**le or pain in your neck or shoulder may be caused by the fascial restrictions coming from your C Section scar!

Any effects from this scar cannot be assumed but need to be skilfully assessed before then treating the body as a whole. Not just the scar but all the possible little ripples than fan out from the scar itself.

For more information or to have your scar assessed please do get in contact!

✨ Follow your dreams ✨

Last week I came to Malta to see my daughter graduate. This is a story of dreaming and achieving to make that dream 💜

A girl at school who struggled (like me) because sitting still was hard and she had no focus.

She just always wanted to have a family and be a mummy and she achieved that.

But then she wanted more, to better herself and to be able to support her family more. So she studied and worked hard whilst holding down a full time job, being pregnant and being a mummy.

This week she achieved something massive and I’m so pleased we managed to come and witness her graduate.

The next step is booked and I’m so excited to see what she can achieve!

Have your dreams….follow your dreams and achieve. Being a mother shouldn’t stop that it’s about finding time to make things work for you ❣️

🌿 C Section awareness 🌿

Massaging your scar and the surrounding area can make a big difference to how you feel about the scar as well as the look and feel of the scar.

This is something I really wish mums were taught early on before they leave the hospital or taught by a Health visitor. It’s easy to do and doesn’t take long to get into a routine.

I have a longer video for anyone interested on how to desensitise your scar in the very early days and how to work with it as time goes by.

If the video could be useful for you just comment ‘yes please’ and I will send you a link to watch it. I hope it helps demystify scar massage and gives you confidence to give it a try. Perfect if you’re booked in for a section too!

If you don’t want to touch your scar this is something I can help with. Book in for a C Section Recovery session and let me help you 💜

🌿 C Section awareness 🌿

There are so many creams and potions on the market selling to be used on scars. I haven’t used or tried them all so I can’t recommend those. I can recommend the ones I have personally tried and had good results with.

Firstly don’t use anything on your scars until it’s completely healed. Then when it is using something that contains vitamin E which will help with your healing is ideal. I always recommend either wheatgerm oil or Rosehip oil. Not expensive, not containing parabens or heavily perfumed.

I also recommend Alhydran which is perfect for scars and helps healing. Easy to rub on and not too greasy.

It’s all about choice but please check the ingredients the cream or oil contains. Whatever you’re putting on your scar and your body needs to be safe for you.

Use in the scar and the surrounding area gently but firmly. Check my post on scar massage for more information on what to do!

I feel we need to reframe the way we view a C Section.

This way of giving birth is NOT failure.
This way of giving birth is not an ‘easy way out’
We need to stop using the phrase ‘natural birth’ for a vaginal birth.
Birthing a baby is the baby’s birth not ours
No one is less of a woman because they didn’t give birth vaginally.

Please let’s stop passing judgement or asking why mums choose a C Section. This woman has birthed her baby 💜 and that’s what matters.

🌿 C Section awareness 🌿

A question I’m asked a lot. Some therapists have very specific times they like to work with scar. For me, the scar needs to be clean, dry and healed. This can be anything from 6 - 12 weeks but often later than this.

We all heal at different rates and have had different pregnancies, different lives, different reasons for the op so I would say the time is individual to YOU.

Clean, dry and healed is the important thing.

Also important to remember is that there is no cut off date. I often work with scars 30+ years old and I’m still able to make a difference to the look or feel. Never feel your scar is too old!

A C Section Recovery session is a 90 minute one which you can book through the link on my bio or through the website at www.mothermassage.co.uk

I also run Courses for Therapists wanting to learn these techniques if this is an interest to you.

Connecting to your scar can be something many women find difficult. I have mums who can’t touch or look at their scars for a variety of reasons.

Scars hold emotions and if the op came along with trauma prior to the section your scar can be holding on to this. An op on its own is a trauma to the body let alone the reasons why you’re having it.

Connection can be made over clothes initially if that’s helpful. It can be made by using something other than your hand, by simply placing a muslin over it.

This can take weeks not just days. Be patient with yourself and give yourself time 💜

The more you touch and desensitise it the more you will be able to connect with it and the more you will be able to accept the scar.

I am always happy to help you with this either by helping you connect or treating you with a C Section Recovery session.

🌿 C Section awareness month 🌿

April gives us a fantastic chance to support mums who are going to have a C Section or have had one.

Everyone’s experience, like pregnancy is different so the tips and information I share is suitable for the majority of mums.

The C Section Recovery Session I offer is personalised to the mum who comes in, taking in their pregnancy, reason for C section, past pregnancies and birth experiences and how they have been feeling bit physically and emotionally.

A 90 minute session catering specifically for them and their needs 💜

I also offer a 3 day training course for experienced, qualified Therapists who want to be able to offer this work to their clients.

Both the session and the course can be found in the link on my bio or on my website www.mothermassage.co.uk

🌿 April is C Section awareness Month

I have prepared a few posts to share over the month to hopefully answer questions you may have, help you prepare for you section and your recovery.

If there’s anything you would like me to include or cover please let me know. I would love to be able to make these posts informative and touch on things you feel you need to know.

Any tips you have for other mums would be helpful too. I’ve started a list so I can send new mums a copy. If we can help even one mum feel less alone or unsure then that’s great!

🤰 Mobility in Pregnancy 🤰

Keeping your body mobile and able to move in a variety of ways in pregnancy has several advantages.

FOR THE BABY:
• Giving them more space to make an optimal descent into the pelvis
• Keeping restrictions to a minimum so the baby can move down and through the pelvis centrally

FOR THE MOTHER:
• More comfort in her pregnancy
• Being able to move freely in a variety of ways
• Being able to listen to her gut instinct during labour to assist her baby
• To have the ability to keep active and strong

Watch in the video how the pelvis needs to move during labour and see why mobility and flexibility can aid you.

Unsure of what to do? Why not join our Pregnancy Exercise class on Wednesdays at 6pm where we keep fit, strong, mobile and prep for labour!! A great way to meet other mums going through this stage too ❣️
