Winter Tip No.2 -
Keep your nose warm!!!
Sounds simple, but I see so many people walking around with scarves pulled tight around their necks, but their nose is left out in the cold.
The nose is our first line of defence against the cold virus. It is lined with fine, hair-like projections known as cilia. The sinuses are lined with mucus-making cells. The mucus (snot) keeps the nose from drying out. Together, cilia and snot collect dust, bacteria and other debris before they can enter the rest of the body. This process is less effective when the nose is cold. Our immune system is less effective when it is cold.
The optimal temperature for a cold virus to replicate is 33 degrees celcius, (normal body temperature is 37 degrees). This makes it extremely important that we look after our noses and keep them nice and warm to allow them to do their job efficiently.
In short, if you are cold, the virus can thrive, so keep warm and the cold virus won’t get passed your nose.
