After an international judo career, a sport filled life and not to mention an operationally active career in the RAF, in 2016 I faced the biggest fight yet. To learn to walk again.
The scariest thing for me post surgery was being vulnerable and reliant on others. I remember the day I arrived at Headley Court I fell forwards in my wheelchair and spent the night crying, I was in a lot of pain and I didnโt want to ask for help - I had always been so independent. The next day as I hovered in a pool chair over the hydrotherapy pool, my โlifeโ in the hands of my physio, I felt more scared than I had ever experienced in my life (and I have worked in war zones!). Even writing this my adrenaline is pumping and I feel nauseous at the memory.
Fast forward to 2018, it has been a long, long journey of rehabilitation and I have been supported by the best team of therapists, within and also outside of the Military. Having my Dad take me to the local gym daily, helping me to walk again, keeping my mind & body active and importantly regain my confidence is something which is imprinted on my mind for life. That one to one support was, and still is, essential in a rehabilitation journey. Therefore when an opportunity came up to train as a Sports Therapist at the end of my military service, I felt it was almost fate pointing me in this direction to help others going through similar challenges to what I have faced.
I am passionate about supporting others on their journey back to fitness, whether thatโs to be able to get dressed unaided, to walk upstairs pain free or to represent your country in your chosen sport, I want to help. I truly believe that my passion to help, together with the excellent training I have undertaken at the Active Health Group will bring a unique service to Hyndburn and the surrounding areas.
