One of the things clients say most often after regular reflexology isn’t what you’d expect.

It’s not always about sleep improving.
Or headaches easing.
Or feeling less tense.

It’s this:
“I feel more like myself again.”

More patient.
More present.
Less reactive.
Less rushed.

Sometimes the biggest change is simply feeling like you again.

Simple ways to calm your nervous system..

We often think relaxation has to be something big, time-consuming or expensive but honestly, the nervous system responds best to small, simple signals of safety repeated regularly.

Here are a few gentle things you can do for yourself:

Slow your breathing

Try breathing in for 4… and out for 6.
Longer exhales tell the body it’s safe and help switch off that stress response.

Warm your feet
A warm bath, cosy socks or a gentle foot soak.
This sounds so simple, but warmth and grounding send incredibly calming signals through the whole body.

Go for a walk
Fresh air and natural light work wonders. Even 10 minutes can help reset your mood and clear your head.

Reduce stimulation
Turn the TV off. Put the phone down. Sit in quiet for a few minutes.
Our brains rarely get true silence and they really need it.

Gentle self-touch
Hand on heart, a slow neck rub, massaging your feet, hands and wrists, scalp.
Safe, soothing touch tells your nervous system it can finally relax.

Create a little wind-down ritual
Dim the lights, grab a blanket, make a cuppa, head to bed earlier.
Small signals done consistently make a big difference.

Of course, let's not forget that this is exactly why reflexology works so beautifully… it helps the body move properly into its rest and restore mode.

Your nervous system isn’t asking for perfection, just consistency and kindness.

Sensory walks can be a GREAT way for calming your nervous system..

My daughter and I go on a short daily walk around Ellesmere which includes a a little time around the canal..

We take time to slow down and listen to the birds, laughter and chatter from passers by, watching the ducks suddenly racing along the canal, the gentle chugging of the narrowboats and of course this time of year, the buzz of the insect world as they wake up and follow the trail of the lovely scents leading them to nectar.

There are two trees on our walk which smell beautiful this time of year which when the wind blows in the right direction, you smell before you see the trees.. It's very intoxicating to the insect world..

All of these which we become aware of, help us to be in the present moment, they help calm your nervous system and when you are in a regular relaxed state, you are in a position to start observing what's "bothering" you within and in a non judgemental way, can observe, acknowledge and start to release it.

However, take my daughter's advice, check the blossom first before you give it a good sniff as what you don't want to do, is snort a bug up your nose! Not so great for the nervous system... or the bug!

Poor bug.. Didn't know what had hit it..

I’ve loved my PT session at the gym this afternoon with Vicky at Getfitwithvick I’ve missed it this last week...

Lately I’ve been thinking about how my 'wellbeing' self-care kit has evolved.

It feels really healthy and properly tailored to what I need right now but like anything important, it needs a regular little 'health check' to make sure it still fits my life as it changes.

My bag currently includes wellbeing walks for my mental and physical health, gym sessions, meditation, energy and nervous system regulation, and it goes without saying that it includes reflexology.

It’s not about perfection or ticking boxes, it’s about ongoing maintenance and meeting myself where I am in this moment of my life.

The most important part of the self care tool kit, is whether i'm enjoying it too - becomes a far easier habit when we do..

When I look after myself in this way, I’m able to show up better in my everyday life and be fully present for the people I support.

Your self-care kit doesn’t have to look like mine. but it's important that it works for you.

Have fun! ☀️
