I’ve been asked a lot recently about how I feel about another gym opening in otley.

I would be lying if I said I’m totally fine , because people will always be attracted to something new and shiny.

People come and go and sometimes we’re just not the right fit for each other which is fine. But some people become like close friends so it’s always hard when they leave. In all honesty I miss them.

That’s the thing about creating a community, this isn’t just a faceless enterprise. Some people are part of the fabric of the building. They’ve been with me since I very first began.

But I’ve worked extremely hard to make my business model stand out and be different to other local gyms. I’m tiny , and still growing.

But I’m also a firm believer that we can absolutely have more of the same type of business in a town, we have a vast array of amazing coffee shops, hairdressers, beauticians, aestheticians, butchers, the list is endless. They all thrive and serve up the same thing in their own style.

So whilst you’re allowed to leave me and return, without any hard feelings, just know that you all leave your mark on me, some of you have watched me grow as if I was a child 🥹.

And we have exciting things afoot for 2026 💫

What sets us apart from other gyms?

We have a passion for strength training , because of this most of our classes have a strong focus on teaching you how to do this with good form and progressive overload to get stronger over time.

We have early morning classes every weekday on offer to ensure you get the chance to come and train before work.

All of our classes are led by level 3 personal trainers - we make sure we correct your form to ensure you’re “doing it right”

Our classes are small- no big busy room where you get lost doing the wrong thing.

We are also an open gym so you can use the space independently, we even spend time setting your complimentary individual program when you join, and taking you through this so you understand how to use our equipment.

We constantly invest in new equipment, check out our hip drive and treadmill new in this autumn.

We don’t advertise this much but we are actually a 24 hour facility. You can enter the building without restricted opening hours.

We are the gym that people who don’t enjoy typical gym environments come to. We are friendly, welcoming and want to help you enjoy fitness. We encourage you to meet our other members so you look forward to seeing your new friends.

We are a community of like minded people. We have regular coffee mornings for our members, days out, social events and have hosted charity hyrox style fitness events since spring 2024 , raising thousands of pounds for charity. We even have a book club - we believe in approaching your health holistically, we give nutrition advice with our experienced , nutrition qualified trainers, supplement advice and build personalised training programmes.

We also have discounts with local businesses such as treehouse, house of beauty , ivy house and leafy couture.

We’re so keen to keep our members happy, we’re working on a revised timetable to offer more and continue growing.

If only you knew how much energy I pour into this little community. I absolutely love my gym, and I am incredibly proud of what we are , and how we continue to grow.

It’s a known fact that human connection is the biggest driver of positive health outcomes. Strong social ties can lead to a longer life, a stronger immune system, better heart health, and improved mental well-being, including a lower risk of anxiety and depression.

So I don’t just hang around in a gym delivering the odd class.

Luke and I regularly come up with ideas to create connection, to keep everyone socially interacting, to look at our health in a holistic fashion.

We have charity days, days out, competitions both in and out of the gym, socials, coffee mornings.

You don’t get that at your big commercially owned gym models.

Fatloss is hard, but do you know what’s harder?

Being uncomfortable in your body that you live in every day.

Temporary discomfort < staying the same.

Lock in for a short period of your life , change some of your unhealthy patterns.

Show up at the gym, get in some steps and fresh air. Sleep better, choose better sources of food.

None of it happens overnight, but it doesn’t happen at all if you don’t take the first step.

You want to join the gym to get stronger and fitter , but first you just need to get stronger and fitter or you’ll feel a tit because you’re not strong and fit enough.

In my twenties and thirties I didn’t care much for how I ate or how much I drank. I knew I probably should do less of both but I was here for a good time not a long time right?. I didn’t care about the quality of my food. I definitely wanted more sleep , but didn’t make any steps for it to be a priority. I liked going to the gym, and always preferred strength over cardio, but wasn’t really pushing myself or following a protocol. I did the bare minimum and the only goal I had was to be smaller. Thinner like skimmed milk or thin air 😩

I wish I had known that your twenties , specifically post baby is when muscle mass starts to naturally decline. That when you don’t prioritise strength , it’s harder to regain it. That when you lose muscle mass through dieting alone and not looking at food quality , that when you start to regain whatever you manage to lose, you’re most likely to gain more body fat - leaving you - a young woman just desperate to feel her best - in a perpetual cycle of eating less and less food (but overeating when you become so hungry that it’s hard to sustain).

I wish I knew that active people, who prioritise strength training and cardio, live longer better quality lives. That all this effort isn’t for nothing just because the scales aren’t telling you a number you want to see (that nobody else cares about). That you’re actively fending off dementia, osteoporosis, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis and some cancers.

Because now I’m a bit older, I do care. I care more about feeling my best, as well as just looking nice, I care about how much energy I have, and how I’ll enter old age.

Hopefully I’ll be breakdancing into mine 🤩
