When should I give my baby chocolate? 🤔🍫
It was my birthday at the weekend and my family and I all enjoyed a lovely coffee and cake trip out.
Both of my boys chose chocolate cake and managed to demolish it in seconds! It got me thinking about when they first had chocolate and how much they enjoyed it.
When to give chocolate for the first time isn't something parents chat about much so I thought other parents may find it helpful to know when a good time would be.
➡️It is generally safe to give babies chocolate from around 6 months of age, however it is suggested that it is best avoided until the age of around 2 years of age, due to it containing caffeine and refined sugars
➡️However, it is tough to avoid chocolate completely for those first 2 years, especially if your baby has an older sibling or family and friends give chocolate "treats" for the baby. I was a lot stricter with my first child, Luca, and avoided giving him chocolate until he was around 18 months old. However, Jenson, my second child, definitely had it earlier as he wanted everything his older brother had!
➡️I think a realistic bit of advice would be to avoid giving it before the age of 1 year and if you do offer it after this time then give very small amounts in moderation. Continue to offer a wide variety of foods.
➡️If your child suffers from allergies or symptoms of colic/stomach pains/reflux then it is best avoided in those early years.
➡️Most importantly, get a great video/picture of them having chocolate for the first time! My two are chocolate lovers, like me, so the smile on their faces when they first had chocolate is one to be treasured!
