It is important to manage the environment in which an infant is nursed by considering the four ways in which infants lose heat, as shown in the figure.

Keeping an infant’s temperature within a normal range is an essential skill of neonatal care. To maintain the infant’s temperature between 36.5 C and 37.2 C, they should be nursed in a neutral thermal environment (NTE). This is an environment that allows the infant to conserve energy and use the minimum amount of oxygen to maintain a normal temperature.
