✨ A Meaningful Moment ✨
One of our residents is a humorous gentleman who will happily admit that he enjoys his own company, preferring the comfort of his bedroom, even when activities he enjoys are taking place in the heart of the home. He spends much of his time watching television and rarely chooses to socialise with other residents.
Over time it has been our quiet mission to support him to feel comfortable stepping back into the community. Having lived with us for a number of yeas , this has never been something he felt keen on. His time outside his room has been limited to the occasional cup of tea in the garden, coming downstairs for a haircut, or popping to the kitchen for food.
As a team, we have focused on building his confidence, supporting him at his own pace, and helping him feel safe and respected while gently regaining his independence.
Last Tuesday marked a really special milestone. With the support of our activity coordinator and head of care — both of whom have built strong, trusting relationships with him — he went back out into the community. At his request, they travelled a little further than his usual area of Blackbird Leys and visited Abingdon Tesco instead, allowing him to feel comfortable and maintain his dignity by going somewhere he was unlikely to see familiar faces.
It may seem like a small step, but moments like this mean so much. They remind us that progress looks different for everyone — and that gentle, person-centred support can make a world of difference 💙
