Strength training reduces risk of early death by 31%!!!

Sounds a bit morbid to throw that stat out there but it's true. For the majority of our members (and myself) lifting weights isn't about how we look. It's about how we perform and bulletproofing us for later life πŸ’ͺ

How to start lifting with zero experience!

The first thing I recommend is getting along to one of our classes (obv πŸ˜‚) but if you're wanting to head to the gym in the meantime then here's a few of things you can do to set you up for success:

1) Create a goal & make a plan!
What is it you want to achieve? This focus allows you to do a little bit of research and start to develop a mini plan of what you're going to do in the gym when you go. Once you know what your goal is, work backwards and find exercises that align with your goal.

2) Not comfortable using dumbbells or barbells yet? (Get along to our classes! Honestly, it's great πŸ˜‚) You can try using the machines at your local gym. They are great for getting you up and running without the faff and they guide you through the movements.

3) Stick to this for at least 3 months. If you can manage 2x30 minute sessions per week for 3 months, you'll be amazed at your results.

Starting with....

1️⃣ How To: Perfect Your Squat

Most squat problems come from one fix: better bracing.

Here’s the quick cue system:

1. Feet rooted (big toe, little toe, heel)
2. Big breath in
3. Brace like someone is about to poke your ribs
4. Sit between your hips, not forward
5. Drive up through your heels

Try this: Film your squat from the side today (if using a big gym make sure you're not recording anyone or have permission!). Compare your depth, torso angle, and knee tracking. Adjust one thing πŸ’ƒπŸΌ

Linda is a bit of a local legend at GAC - keeping everyone working to the correct order every class πŸ˜‚πŸ‘€

Since joining our club as an OG member last year, she has smashed personal records on a regular basis and gained confidence every step of the way πŸ‹οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

Whether that's over regularly pulling over 100kg Deadlifts, Strict Pull Ups, Olympic Lifts and everything else Linda can lift, she is honestly one of the most inspirational people I have the pleasure of coaching 😊

All About Get Active Coaching CIC

Get Active Coaching was established in October 2019 as a sport and exercise business with one simple mission: help get more children and adults active through sport and physical activity. It was set up by me! My name is Martin, and I started this business as I love all things sport and exercise. I wanted to find a way that I could use my passion, experience and knowledge to benefit others.

I have been involved in sport all my life and reached a high level in my younger days in both rugby and football. I have been a Rugby Developmment Officer for Scottish Rugby, which is where I gained a huge amount about how to implement sport and exercise in the community. Except this time, its not just for rugby, it is for every sport you can think of. Since my time as a Rugby Development Officer, I have completed my BSC (Hons) in Sport, Fitness and Coaching, achieved numerous sport coaching qualifications, which has given me the foundation to start and build Get Active Coaching!

Now, back to business. Get Active Coaching has recently achieved a huge milestone: We are now a Community Interest Company! I have spent the last 6 months creating partnerships with local organisations to develop working relationships, business parnerships and even assemble a small coaching workforce to help me with my delivery. I can now begin to make a bigger impact in the community through sport and exercise and help people live a healthier lifestyle as a result.
