📚 Who Was Ogma — Ireland’s God of Speech, Strength, and the Ogham Alphabet?
(Pronounced OG-ma)
Ogma is one of the most fascinating gods of the Tuatha Dé Danann — a warrior, a poet, and the creator of Ireland’s first written script, Ogham. He represents the perfect blend of brain and brawn, embodying both physical strength and the power of the spoken word.
In the old tales, Ogma was strong enough to drag entire armies, yet wise enough to weave poetry that could settle disputes, inspire warriors, and preserve the knowledge of the gods. He is often shown as a champion standing beside Lugh and the Dagda, forming a trio of power, wisdom, and skill.
But Ogma’s greatest gift to Ireland is Ogham, the ancient alphabet carved along the edges of standing stones. According to legend, he created it as a secret form of communication for the gods — a script of lines, not letters, each marking knowledge, memory, and identity.
Every Ogham stone still standing in Ireland is a whisper of Ogma’s legacy.
Ogma is the voice of the gods, the strength of heroes, and the mind behind Ireland’s earliest writing.
