Really encouraging news that Pembrokeshire ranks in the UK’s top ten for defibrillator coverage per head of population. That’s something to be proud of, and it reflects the hard work of communities, volunteers and fundraisers who have made public access defibrillators more widely available.

But it’s also worth pausing to think about what those numbers really mean.

When it comes to cardiac arrest, time is everything. Measuring defibrillators “per population” sounds impressive, but it’s not actually the most meaningful marker. What really matters is distance – how quickly someone can physically reach a defibrillator and get it to a patient.

If a shock can be delivered within two minutes, survival rates can be as high as 80%. After 10 minutes, the chances of survival are very, very low indeed. That stark contrast shows why proximity, accessibility (24/7 access), and public awareness are just as important as the overall number of devices installed.

And when we consider that Wales currently has only a 4.9% success rate for survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, it highlights how much more there is to do. Coverage on paper is one thing. Rapid access in real life is another.

So yes – this is a great start. But perhaps the real question we should be asking is: how far are we, our families, our workplaces and our communities from the nearest defibrillator? And would we know how to use it?

Food for thought

It's above the UK average 🚨

Hi everyone 👋

I realised that while many of you know my business, not all of you know me — the person behind WOW First Aid Training 💙

I’m a nurse by background and have spent many years working in healthcare, which is where my passion for first aid and emergency care really began. Alongside nursing, I’ve also built a career in teaching — because I don’t just love doing the job, I love empowering others with the skills and confidence to step in when it matters most.

For me, first aid isn’t just about getting a certificate — it’s about knowing that if something happens to your child, your colleague, your neighbour… you won’t freeze. You’ll act.

When I’m not delivering training, you might find me volunteering with Esteam, which is something I’m incredibly proud to be part of, or cold water swimming in the sea (yes, even when it’s freezing! 🥶🌊). It clears my head and reminds me how resilient we really are.

And if there’s music playing somewhere, I’m probably there! I love dancing, going to gigs, and having a good laugh — because life’s too short not to enjoy it.

I’m a big animal lover too, and pet first aid has become a growing part of what I offer. My dog Bella keeps me on my toes and is a constant reminder that our four-legged family members need us to know what to do as well 🐶💛

My goal with every course is to make learning practical, relaxed, hands-on, and supportive (with plenty of real-life stories and usually a few laughs along the way!). I want you to leave feeling confident — not overwhelmed.

If we haven’t met yet, I’d love to say hello. Drop a comment and tell me — have you ever had to use first aid in real life?

Thank you for being here and supporting my small business. It genuinely means the world 💙

A little reminder that looking after yourself is part of looking after your business 💙

I recently enjoyed an overnight stay at The Imperial Hotel - Tenby — and it was just what I needed.

From excellent food to warm hospitality and outstanding service, it was a real treat to slow down, recharge, and appreciate what we have on our doorstep 🌊✨

Running a business can be demanding, and it’s easy to put your own wellbeing last. But taking time out, even briefly, makes such a difference to energy, focus, and motivation.

Supporting local businesses, enjoying our beautiful area, and investing in your own wellbeing… that’s good for you and good for business.

Highly recommended 💛

The key to improving survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests is the CHAIN OF SURVIVAL.

The first 3 stages depend on competent and confident bystanders.

Would you know what to do?
Would your loved ones know what to do if you collapsed?

Have the conversations, book the training, save a life.
