🔵MOUTH CANCER ACTION MONTH | November
Mouth cancer is one of the fastest-growing cancers in the UK - and awareness saves lives.
📊 Key Facts:
- 10825 people in the UK were diagnosed with mouth cancer last year.
- Worldwide mouth cancer affects 650000 per year
-78% of cases occur in the over 55 age group.
-More people die from mouth cancer than from testicular and cervical cancer combined.
- 25% of cases have no associated risk factors.
- Mouth cancer is TWICE as common in men than women, though an increasing number of woman are being diagnosed with the disease.
⚠️Risk factors:
- To***co use is the main cause of mouth cancer.
- Drinking alcohol to excess can increase risks four fold
- Drinking & smoking together can make mouth cancer up to 30 times more likely to develop
- The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), transmitted through oral s*x, could soon overtake alcohol and to***co as the main risk factors.
👄 Know the signs:
- A mouth ulcer that doesn’t heal after 3 weeks
- Lumps or swellings in the mouth or neck that persist for more than 3 weeks
- Red or white patches that do not heal
- Unexplained numbness or pain
- Persistent hoarseness or difficulty speaking/swallowing
