On Monday we will be delivering our 10th Understanding Autism in-depth training day for Inverclyde HSCP. It has been an absolute pleasure to meet so many enthusiastic and interested participants from across the HSCP. They even laughed at some of our jokes and participated in the 'Team Spaniel vs Team Greyhound' debate. 😁
Hopefully what we have done will make a real difference. It's about autism understanding, not awareness, not an introduction. A bespoke course specifically developed for Inverclyde.
Hopefully we can do more of the same in the future as knowledge changes and we find better and better ways to make learning enjoyable and impactful.
Let us know if you want to find more about that we can do.

Is "Free Training' in autism what you need?
On Social Media I am seeing more and more opportunities for free autism training. Sounds great (except for those who run training businesses). But has made me think about what is the most important thing when it comes to learning about autism at any level?
Having delivered autism training in many different situations over the last 30 years, without doubt the most important thing is the opportunity for the learner to ask questions, to translate the theories into what it means for the autistic people they know, their family members, the people they work with.
During the pandemic, despite the guidelines, the most common query was ‘what do the guidelines actually mean for me…in my particular situation’ Only a small minority of people live in typical, nuclear family which the guidelines seemed to be written for. Most people don’t live in family units with 2 parents, 2 children and a couple of grandparents, two streets away.
Most autistic people don’t fit the training courses view of the ‘typical autistic person’

So …whatever training in autism you choose/deliver/recommend, make sure there is opportunity to ask ‘ what does that actually mean for me, for my family, for the person I work with’

Lots of coverage about autism understanding this week/month
But it's time we moved on from awareness to understanding. I am aware of many things I don't understand and it makes no difference to anyone. We need to understand the autistic person if we want to make a difference. Acceptance as well is desirable but for me that isn't positive enough either. I can accept things I don't understand if I am not really interested. The goal has to be understanding.
