Relaxation is good and definitely helps you switch off- but it isn't a solution for chronic insomnia.

A 2025 home based sleep study looked at a single session of relaxation massage before bedtime in people with strong insomnia symptoms, using portable sleep monitoring and a sham comparison. The authors reported improved sleep efficiency after the relaxation massage session. But, as this was a small study only testing short term, immediate effects.

Takeaway for therapists, you can speak about relaxation and sleep support, but keep it honest. One session may help some people settle and fall asleep more easily, it does not prove a long term solution for chronic insomnia. ✅
