I’m just back from a private nighttime session inside the great pyramid and completely mind blown. I lay in the sarcophagus in the kings chamber (big baksheesh for that obvs) whilst the group of past life priestesses that I am travelling with chanted. My first thought when I got in was ‘oh god I might die’ and then as soon as I lay down the granite felt as soft as a feather bed, I was in utter bliss and wanted to stay there forever. It was like some portal to the afterlife. I had to drag myself out and then lay on the floor completely incapable for the next half hour.

Gebel Al-Silsila is a quarry used in the Egyptian Middle Kingdom from 2000 BC to build some of the most iconic temples in Upper Egypt such as Karnak and Edfu and downstream to Philae. The mountain is on both sides of the river, meaning the Nile effectively runs through it, making this area the narrowest point of Nile. The Ancient Ones felt this stone carried the perfect vibrations for their temples and was also easy to transport with the faster flowing water here.

The stone is sandstone which represents element of earth. The other elements are held by limestone for water, granite for fire and alabaster for air. Limestone’s softness makes it perfect for carving, as opposed to granite for example.

Whereas quarries often feel distressed, even violated, this space felt beautifully calm and holding, and unsurprisingly, very grounding. There was a little temple to Amun Ra beside it, which had the vibe of a small country church, (compared to the cathedrals we have been seeing), and some beautiful little carved out areas that I could imagine being the perfect place to retreat to for meditation or a vision quest.

Good morning from the River Nile. The river of life. The river born from the tears of Isis, grieving for her beloved Osiris. She is also considered by Egyptians as the backbone of the world and mirrored in the sky as the Milky Way. Undoubtedly a river of extraordinary gifts. It’s also the longest river in Africa and one of the very few rivers which flow south to north. In the medicine wheel South generally represents being in life whilst North represents the afterlife/between lives, South the emotions and North the intellect. So we can reflect today on that journey from head to heart, heart to head, on grief, on the essence of life itself.

I am spending my birthday at the Temple of Thoth, aka Medinet Habu a massive mortuary temple complex on Luxor’s West Bank, built by Ramesses III (c. 1184–1153 BC). Thoth was god of writing and wisdom and also had a deep connection to Moon. He was a conduit between the higher realms and humans. Some also suggest that he was the first God who came from another dimension and seeded the earth. Various bribes allowed me to cleanse myself in the temple’s sacred well containing 3500 year old water from the Nile (and a dead pigeon!) and then prey in the spot that Rameses preyed to the gods. What a start to my new year.

I’m in Luxor, surrounded by ankhs, the key of life. Some of the symbolism includes a union between the masculine and the feminine (the rounded top half representing the womb, the straight bottom half, well you get the picture). In another of the images you can see the waters of the Nile being poured on Queen Hatshepsut, depicted as a stream of ankhs. Life giving, life affirming, and of course my new logo!

Hooray we are through the darkest part of Winter. Thank goodness today is Imbolc. The beginning of the beginning of the new year. In my book ‘Wild Self’ I suggest rituals you can perform to mark the festivals of the year, here are some ideas for today:

• Walk through your dark house holding a lit
candle. You could place a bowl of milk, some
snowdrops, or a symbol of fertility – it could be a
photo of your pregnant tummy or a corn doll on
your altar.

• When you’re out and the sun is shining, take a
moment to face the sun and express gratitude
for the life that it gives us.

• Make an earth candle to honour our
connection with Mother Earth, who nurtures all
the seeds and roots of plants that are waiting for
spring sunshine. Choose a spot in the garden,
and prepare the ground preferably a day before,
to let insects move on. Consider how much wax
you have for your Earth Candle. Make your hole
accordingly and pack the soil firmly; you can add
some sand if you like. Use a stick as a candle wick
and melt Christmas candle stumps or beeswax
granules in an old saucepan. Pour melted wax
into the prepared hole in the ground, insert the
stick, and allow to cool. Light your Earth Candle
and rejoice! Spring is coming!

• Join a group and learn how to make Brigid
crosses. I gathered with a group of women to do
this and honour the earth – quite a tricky job if
you’re ham-fisted like me.

• Plant a tree. We planted an olive tree and underneath it added a lock of hair of my beloved and a message from darker times for Mother Earth to transform.

If you had met me thirty years ago, you would have found a journalist in London, documenting the world’s spiritual shifts but still searching for my own solid ground. My journey to where I am today didn’t happen in a straight line—it took a meeting with the Dalai Lama, a trek through Tibet, and a profound realization: we are a culture that has lost its roots.

I’m Emma Pruen. I’m a Transpersonal Coach, a Shamanic Practitioner, and a Systemic Constellations facilitator. But more than that, I am someone who believes that our modern ‘stuckness’—that heavy feeling of burnout and disconnection—is actually a call from our wild essence to come home.

What does that mean in practice? It means I help people look at the hidden dynamics in their lives. Whether it’s an ancestral pattern that isn’t yours to carry, or a nervous system that has forgotten how to breathe, I use earth-based rituals and systemic work to help you find resolution.

Why ‘Wild Self’? I wrote my book, Wild Self, after an 18-month journey across Britain. I wanted to find the « shamanic nation »—the people and places reconnecting with the land to heal our modern souls. From sweat lodges to forest bathing, I discovered that the courage to be wild isn’t about being reckless; it’s about being authentic.

Today, I work between the UK and The French Retreat near Bordeaux (which I co-founded with my late husband, Matthew). Whether we meet in a group circle or an online coaching session, my mission is the same: to help you exercise the muscle of courage and step into a life of purpose.

I’m so glad you’re here. Tell me in the comments—where do you feel most « at home » in nature? 🍃
