A Career in Prosthodontics: personal reflections and global perspectives

Aims:
This presentation aims to use personal reflections from a career in prosthodontics to explore changing clinical thinking and the wider global implications of tooth loss.
Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Explain the role of reflective practice as a foundation for professional development
2. Describe key changes in prosthodontic concepts and treatment approaches and how these have evolved over the course of a practising career.
3. Discuss the public health significance of tooth loss, considering its impact within a global context.

Speaker:

Adela Peachey is a Specialist
Prosthodontist and has been enjoying restoring smiles with implant and conventional restorations for more than 25 years.

For the past 19 years she has worked at Blackhills Clinic, a specialist referral practice in Perthshire, Scotland.
She was instrumental in establishing the WIN (Women's Implantology Network) UK and Ireland initiative, joining the first UK WIN Committee in 2019 and has also been supporting the Global WIN initiative since 2018.
Adela strongly believes in the empowerment of education and has been furthering her own education outside of implant dentistry. Having successfully gained a Master's degree in Art and Humanities in 2023, she is now studying for a Master's degree in Dental Public Health at Dundee University and hopes to now pursue a career in Public Health.

Aims:
To show that we should we keep as many teeth as possible in conjunction with dental implants, and to show how a dentist driven but patient accepted treatment approach may not be what it seems.
Objectives:
1. To show what is the longevity of teeth compared to dental implants if either develop periodontal complications.
2. To show the long-term data on success and survival of "All on X", compared to conventional mixed implants and teeth.
3. To show the true biological costs of "All on X".
4. To go over the different occlusal schemes and why keeping teeth helps in occlusion.
5. To present multiple cases of keeping teeth and using implants, demonstrating that implants are used to replace "missing" teeth.

At the start of October we had some very sad news that our very special Ken Watkins had passed away. Ken co-founded Blackhills with Paul in 2007, where they had the idea of a dual purpose Clinic and built it up to where is it now. Ken retired in 2014 and was missed from the minute he left.
Ken was cared for at Cornhill MacMillan Centre in Perth so a few members of staff decided to do a sponsored walk, with all proceeds going to Cornhill. They set off on Saturday 15th November on a 6 mile walk, with kids and dogs in tow. Thankfully it was a beautiful but chilly day. Lots of memories shared of Ken throughout the walk, which involved a lot of laughing as Ken was always full of fun & humour.
We don’t have an updated total yet but thankful for donations we have received.

This week we are saying goodbye to Stephen Ferrier. Who has decided the time has come for him to take early retirement. We will miss Stephen and have enjoyed working with him and learning from him and his wealth of knowledge. We wish Stephen all the best in his retirement.
