We are honoured to announce that we are nominated for TWO awards at the 2025 GP Awards! 🌟

At Thistlemoor Medical Centre, our team works hard every day to provide the best possible care for our community and we are delighted to see this recognised nationally.

🏆 Workforce Wellbeing Award Nomination
This nomination celebrates our commitment to creating a supportive, healthy workplace.
* Our Active Practice Charter encourages movement and wellbeing across the team.
* Our innovative Health Pod work has helped staff feel more connected, supported, and empowered.

We are proud of the culture we are building together. This would not have been achieved without our collaborative approach with Central Medical Centre and Thorpe Road Surgery as part of our PCN and Integrated Neighbourhood.

🏆 Cervical Screening Initiative Award Nomination
This nomination is shared alongside our colleagues at Central Medical Centre and Thorpe Practices. Improving women’s health has been a major focus this year.

Our team has delivered:
* Extra clinics to increase appointment availability
* Drop-in sessions for easier access
* Outreach work to engage women who may face barriers to screening
* Multilingual patient information videos to ensure our diverse community receives clear, accessible information

💛 A huge thank-you to our dedicated staff and to our wonderful patients who continue to support these initiatives. Being shortlisted for these awards is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together.

Living with COPD? We’re here to help.

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) happens when the lungs become inflamed, damaged, or narrowed often due to smoking, long-term exposure to dust or fumes, or sometimes genetic factors. There’s no cure, but there are many ways to manage symptoms and improve your daily life.

Ways to live well with COPD:

🔹 Stop smoking – the most important step to protect your lungs.

🔹 Use your inhalers as prescribed and follow your treatment plan to reduce flare-ups.

🔹 Stay active, eat a balanced diet, keep your weight steady, and try to avoid triggers like pollution or cold air.

🔹 Be aware of symptoms such as a long-lasting cough with phlegm, shortness of breath, or wheezing — and speak to your GP if you’re concerned.

🟣 Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Week 🟣

This week, we’re shining a light on Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis — two types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that can cause gut inflammation and painful ulcers.

These conditions can be difficult to spot because the symptoms are similar to other health issues.
If you're worried about ongoing tummy pain, diarrhoea, blood in your stool, or sudden weight loss, please don’t try to diagnose yourself.

➡️ Speak to your GP — we’re here to help and guide you. 💜

World AIDS Day – 1st December ❤️

Today, we stand together to support everyone living with HIV and to remember those we have lost. World AIDS Day is a reminder of the strength, resilience and courage shown by communities around the world.

Thanks to medical advances, people living with HIV can lead long, healthy lives. But stigma is still a big challenge — and we all have a role to play in creating understanding, kindness and equality.

Wear a Red Ribbon ❤️ to show your support and help spread awareness.
Together, we can build a future where HIV doesn’t stand in the way of anyone’s life.

nutrition and hydration are a big part of staying healthy — but the signs of poor intake can be easy to miss. 🥗💧

Remember to:
👉 Ask friends, neighbours, or family if they’re eating and drinking well

📣 World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week

Antibiotics save lives but only when we use them responsibly.
If you’re prescribed antibiotics, always finish the full course, even if you start to feel better. Stopping early can allow bacteria to become resistant, making infections harder to treat in the future.

Remember: antibiotics do NOT work for colds, flu, or most coughs.
Let’s work together to protect the effectiveness of these vital medicines. 💙

Worried you could be at risk of type 2 diabetes?

Small changes in your family history, lifestyle, or new symptoms can make a big difference.

Here’s what to look out for:

• 👪 Family history matters – If a parent, sibling or close relative has diabetes, your risk increases.

• 🍔 Lifestyle factors count – Being overweight, not very active, or having a larger waist size can raise your risk.

• 🚩 Symptoms can be subtle – Feeling more thirsty, tired, or needing to wee more often could be early signs.

• 📊 Check your risk here: https://riskscore.diabetes.org.uk/start

• 📖 Learn more about diabetes: https://patient.info/diabetes/diabetes-mellitus-leaflet

Remember: diabetes isn’t inevitable. Taking action now can protect your health. 💪
