Customer Testimonial ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Being able to pedal my legs is helping with my blood circulation and my leg spasms. I’m a C5 Tetraplegic so I sit all day in the same position which isn’t always comfortable so being able to stretch my legs for 45 minutes makes a world of difference to my physical and mental health.” (Alex Howe)

BerkelBike Benefits for people Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

“Following a road traffic accident…I sustained multiple injuries but the main thing which was lasting was the spinal cord injury. I wanted something that would exercise both arms and legs…and I came across the BerkelBike, that’s when I contacted Paul and we set up a visit for me to try a few things. I went with the electric power as well, which I try not to use unless I’m biking with someone faster than me – it’s handy to put a bit of power on. The furthest I’ve been is 25 miles which I thought was quite good, it’s a decent bike ride that.” (Adrian Hirst, T9 Incomplete)

🚴‍♂️ Revolutionising Mobility for SCI Patients with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)! 🚴‍♀️

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a groundbreaking technology in muscle stimulation that empowers people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and paralysed muscles to regain movement. By combining FES with adaptive equipment like the BerkelBike or EasyLegs, SCI patients can use their own leg muscles to cycle actively!

✨ Why FES and BerkelBike Make a Difference:
▫️ Active Leg Training: Enables cycling with paralysed legs, relieving the arms and shoulders from overuse, unlike traditional hand bikes.
▫️ Health Benefits: Actively engaging the legs can help prevent common SCI-related issues like obesity, blood pressure irregularities, and pressure ulcers.

FES is not just about movement; it’s about improving quality of life, independence, and health. 💪

Today is World Stroke Day which aims to raise awareness of the prevention and treatment of the condition, and ensure better care and support for survivors.

The Stroke Association advises that if you feel ready, you could try looking at structured exercise such as a workout or a group activity that suits you. Doing exercises like swimming or cycling can help build strength and stamina.

The BerkelBike range is suitable for (further) rehabilitation at home. The BerkelBike Pro, Connect and EasyLegs can be fitted with electrical pedaling assistance so if the legs lack strength to cycle, they can passively move along with the pedaling support. The unaffected side of the body can support the affected side, while it increases in strength, enabling you to train outdoors, gain independence and continue to lead an active life.

Benefits of the BerkelBike Pro for people with a Spinal Cord Injury

“I’ve been in a wheelchair for about 3 years after being knocked off my bike…[the BerkelBike Pro] helps me be more mobile and do the things I used to do,..I can be a bit more independent and the main benefit I’ve found so far is that after I’ve cycled my legs are less stiff, and obviously it increases my lung capacity and my arms are stronger.” (Peter McDermott - SCI T5)

‘Mind control’ races could revolutionise treatments

Owen Collumb, 53, from Dublin, was left paralysed from the chest down after a motorcycle accident in 1993. He hopes to inspire and help other disabled people when he takes part in virtual races using only his brainwaves.

He is training alongside scientists at the University of Bath to compete in Cybathlon 2024 in Zurich this month. The races range from wheelchair, bike and track events. He is entering the brain computer interface race, hoping to complete four challenges in the fastest time, with the support of his engineer.

"This technology will go on to the medical field and probably have some major impact on people's lives," he said.

Just a month to go until CYBATHLON 2024!

One of the disciplines that teams will compete in is the Functional Electrical Stimulation Bike Race.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) uses electrical pulses to activate paralysed muscles due to an injury to the central nervous system. Regular FES cycling after spinal cord injury has been proven to lead to improved bone density, muscle mass, cardiovascular health, and respiratory fitness.

Benefits of the EasyLegs for people with hemiplegia

“My husband encouraged me to choose a trike; the EasyLegs. It allows me to be very independent in life. I can do the shopping myself and go to my therapy. I feel wonderfully free and independent when I’m cycling. I can’t imagine living without it.” (Mieke van de Louw)

The EasyLegs can help people become active after suffering a stroke. Using the EasyLegs the body can be trained using leg propulsion. The unaffected side of the body can support the affected side, while it increases in strength. If the legs lack strength to cycle, they can passively move along with the pedaling assistance.
