Lots of good information being shared on The Lullaby Trust page during Safe Sleep Week 👶🏼 💤

Just because it’s on the shelf doesn’t mean it’s suitable for sleep. 🤔

Baby sleep products aren’t always designed with safer sleep in mind, even if they’re marketed that way.

When it comes to your baby’s sleep space, keep it simple to keep it safe. You don’t need to buy lots of products or spend money on expensive items.

The safest place for a baby to sleep is on their back in their own clear, flat, firm sleep space.

There are just a few items that we recommend – the baby necessities:

- Cot or Moses basket
- Portable sleep space such as a travel cot, carry cot or Moses basket
- Firm, flat, waterproof mattress
- Sleeping bag or sheets and a lightweight blanket
- Room thermometer
- Car seat – this is not intended for sleeping when not travelling, but is essential for safer travel.

❤️🤍❤️ L O V E H O R M O N E ❤️🤍❤️

Oxytocin, known as the "love hormone," is a hormone that promotes bonding, trust, and empathy, and is released during activities like cuddling, touch, and childbirth, strengthening connections between partners, parents and infants, and friends, while also playing key roles in reproduction like uterine contractions and milk release. It helps create feelings of safety and attachment, reducing stress and anxiety 💕

Getting Pregnant 🤰🏼

It is believed to aid in getting pregnant by enhancing s***m transport through uterine contractions and promoting feelings of relaxation and bonding. While primarily known for its role in labour and childbirth, natural, healthy levels of oxytocin are essential for a positive, stress-reduced environment conducive to conception

To start labour 👶🏼

Oxytocin is needed for the uterus to contract and is an essential hormone to aid in spontaneous labour. A man-made version of it called syntocinon/pitocin is also used to induce or augment labour when needed by medical professionals 💉

During labour 👶🏼

* pressure from the baby’s head against the cervix triggers the brain to release more oxytocin, causing stronger and more frequent contractions
* Often called the "love hormone," oxytocin helps reduce fear, anxiety, and stress during labour.
* It also has a natural pain-relieving effect 🙌🏼
* A surge of oxytocin in the final stage of labour gives you the urge to push! 💪🏼
* After birth, it helps the uterus contract to reduce bleeding (you will also be offered an injection of syntometrine after baby is born to reduce bleeding and help birth the placenta, and this contains oxytocin)

Bonding and Breastfeeding 🤱🏼
Oxytocin promotes bonding between mother and baby. It is also responsible for the milk-ejection reflex during breastfeeding.

Things to do to increase Oxytocin ❤️

• Creating a calm, safe, and private environment that reduces stress and adrenaline, will optimise oxytocin levels including dim lighting, quiet surroundings and a familiar environment 🏠
• intimacy and supportive birth partners will help you feel safe which will boost your oxytocin level 👩🏻‍⚕️ 👨🏻
• using familiar comforts such as your music playlists and favourite smells 🎶
• being as comfortable as possible using gentle movement keeping you upright, forward and open such as swaying, dancing, walking, using birth ball or our favourite in PCMU - the pool! 🛀 If on the bed using an epidural for example ask to use the peanut ball and lying on your side or all fours position
• Use affirmations, visualizations, and laughter to reduce fear and anxiety 😃

Happy Valentines Day 💌
