🌟IT BAND SYNDROME🌟
Do you have pain on the outer part of your knee? This could be a sign of ITB syndrome!
ITB syndrome is an overuse injury that is most prevalent in runner and cyclists due to the repetitive leg movements that occur 🚴♀️
The ITB is a thick band of tissue that runs from the hip and attaches to the outer part of the knee 🦵
Excessive hip adduction during running gait is considered a risk factor for ITB syndrome; this unecessary movement can result in compression of one of the outer knee fat pads, which subsequently produces pain (Foch, Aubol & Milner, 2020)💥
Therefore, strengthening the hip stabilisers, especially the abductors, is an integral part of rehabilitation (Friede, Innerhofer, Fink, Algre & Csapo, 2022):
1️⃣ Clamshells (3x10)
2️⃣ Pelvic drop exercise (3x10)
3️⃣ Crab walk with band (3x10)
4️⃣ Single leg squat (3x10)
Aim to complete these exercises 3-5 times per week🏋️
Other management methods include avoiding aggravating activities, reducing training load, stretching the ITB as well as modification of running technique (Friede et al., 2022) 🏃♂️
If you suspect that you could have ITB syndrome it may be beneficial to have an injury assessment completed to ensure the appropriate treatment and rehabilitation can be implemented as it can vary person to person!👩⚕️
